Pruitt and White give solid starts but Indians rally in the end
Salisbury, N.C. - The Brevard College Tornados baseball team (8-29, 2-19) got solid starting pitching from Matthew Pruitt and Jacob White and home runs from Eric Renegar, Kramer Clark and Jackie Corn but Catawba College (31-8, 14-7) swept a Saturday doubleheader at Newman Park. The Indians scored four runs in the eighth inning to win game one 6-2 and put together a five-run seventh inning to take the finale 7-6.
Pruitt pitched into the seventh inning but got no decision in game one. He allowed two runs on two hits while striking out two and walking six.
After five scoreless innings from both teams the Tornados scored twice in the top of the sixth. After a Renegar single to lead off the frame Kramer Clark hit an 0-1 pitch from Indians reliever Wil Huneycutt over the wall in left center for his third home run of the year.
Catawba tied the score in the seventh on a John Hohn two-run homer. Brett Underwood had an RBI single in the eighth and Wade Moore added a two-run double as part of a four-run frame.
Huneycutt worked four innings in relief of starter Nathan Furr and picked up his fourth win of the year. Jacob Koontz took the loss for Brevard.
Corn and Renegar hit solo homers in game two and Brevard held a 6-1 lead going into the final frame. The Tornados scored two runs in a first inning in which four consecutive players had base hits, including an RBI single from Kellen Moman.
Derek Ham singled to left in the sixth to score Renegar.
Hohn hit a two-run double in the Indians seventh to bring Catawba within one and pinch hitter Garrett Furr hit a walk off single through the left side for the final margin.
White worked six innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three and walking three. He got no decision. Josh Case took the loss for Brevard. Travis McSweeney worked one and two thirds innings of relief to earn his second win of the year.
Catawba returns to the diamond Tuesday April 13 at home against Wingate at 7 p.m. Brevard hosts the Crusaders of North Greenville University in a doubleheader April 13. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
