Elmore pitches no-hitter and goes yard in season finale sweep

Brevard, N.C. – Pitcher, Martika Elmore pitched a no-hitter in the Tornados 8-0 victory over Truett-McConnell, and then hit a two-run homer in the second game which was won by a  Kayla Dorsey walk-off double in extra innings for the 5-4 victory.

Brevard finishes the season 19-26 overall, and 5-11 in the conference, while Truett-McConnell falls to 24-26.

Sarah Carlos, who went two for four in the first game and four for eight on the day, batted in two RBIs to lead the Tornados’ offense, while Elmore pitched five hitless innings and struck out ten of the Bears 15 batters.

The Tornados picked up their first run in the bottom of the second when Brittany Jones, who reached base on third strike wild pitch, scored on a Becca Curlee double to left center.

They added two more unearned runs the following inning as Kristina Clayton led off reaching base on an error by the shortstop, and then scored on a Nicole Heusel single. Elmore reached base on a single and then scored on a Whitney Hillman passed ball increasing Brevard’s lead to 3-0.

Becca Curlee led off the fourth inning with a triple to centerfield, followed by a Carlos RBI double, that sparked the Tornados three run inning that made the score 6-0. Maddie Fletcher registered one of the team’s RBIs while the third run in the fourth inning came when Sarah Carlos stole home after the catcher failed to tag her, despite keeping the ball in front.

After Elmore struck out the side in the Bears’ fifth, the Tornados took the game on singles from Carlos and Clayton for the 8-0 win in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Elmore finishes the season with a 14-14 record and leads the SAC in strikeouts.

Liz Houser pitched eight innings, giving up two earned runs on 13 hits while striking out five batters to improve her record to 4-8.

The Tornados scored first, picking up two early runs when Elmore hit a homerun with Clayton onboard in the first inning.

The Bears tied the game in the top of the fourth, 2-2 and added another run to take their first lead of the day 3-2 in the sixth inning.

Heusel drove in Jones on a single for her second RBI of the day to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, and as both teams failed to score in the seventh, the game went into extra innings.

The Bears regained the lead 4-3 in the top of the eighth on a C.J. Wilkes single that drove home the extra inning runner.

Brevard’s extra inning runner, Curlee, also scored on a single, when Fletcher earned her second RBI of the day. Leslie Hylton pinch ran for Fletcher and scored the winning run when Dorsey hit the game winning hit for the 5-4 win.
