Tornados drop to Tusculum in home opener, 3-0September 10, 2010
Morrison and Osby lead Brevard with eight kills apiece
Brevard, N.C. - Jordei Osby and Ashlie Morrison led the Tornados with eight kills apiece on Friday night in Boshamer Gymnasium, but Sam Underwood recorded 13 kills and Rhayne Smitherman added 10 to the Pioneers attack as the Tornados fell in SAC action, 25-15, 25-13, 25-20.
The Tornados (2-4, 0-2 SAC) had four players record kills in the match as Kortney Conner added six and Jamie Atkinson had four. Bethany Stevenson set up the BC attack with 22 set assists to lead the team and added two service aces. Sydney Yeomans and Rebecca Schoonover also added aces for the Tornados.
Defensively, Schoonover led Brevard with seven digs in the match, while Lindsey Rogers recorded six. Yeomans and Stevenson each added five, while at the net, Osby led the team with two total blocks on the evening.
Underwood led the Pioneers (4-2, 2-0 SAC) to a 34.5 percent hitting percentage on the evening, with Ashley Sarmiento setting up the attack with 33 set assists. Caitlyn Dean led all players with 14 digs in the match, while Bailee Price added 10 digs, along with seven kills in the match.
Tusculum opened the first set scoring six of the first seven and 11 of the first 14 points of the match, going up 11-3 after a kill by Underwood. The Tornados were able to get the offense in a rhythm late in the first set, narrowing the gap to 20-14 as Conner recorded three kills to close the gap, but four straight points by the Pioneers led to Smitherson closing out the set with a kill to put Tusculum up 1-0 after the first set.
In the second, Osby led off the set with a kill as the teams were tied in the early going at 3-3. The Pioneers recorded 13 of the next 17 points on their way to building a 16-7 lead in the set, but the Tornados battled back, recording four straight points to cut the lead to 16-11 on Yeoman’s serve as kills by Morrison and Conner and a service ace brought the Tornados back into the set. Tusculum rallied to close out the set on Dean’s serve as the freshman led the Pioneers to recording the late seven points of the set to put the guest up 2-0.
In the third and deciding set, the teams remained tied late, with the score at 17-17 following a kill by BC’s Atkinson as neither team was able to separate themselves, however Tusculum went on a run started by Underwood to put the match at 18-17 Pioneers and Tusculum closed out the match with a 7-3 stretch to close out the match.
Brevard continues its SAC home stand this weekend, hosting rival Mars Hill College on Saturday, September 11th, in Boshamer Gymnasium. First serve between the Tornados and the Lions is set for 3 p.m. Tusculum travels to Hickory, N.C. to take on Lenoir-Rhyne University also on Saturday, with action in Shuford Gymnasium set to begin at 2 p.m.
