Tornados can't match Lakers, fall 6-1

Brevard was outshot 30-8 in their loss to Clayton State

Morrow, Ga. - The Brevard College men’s soccer team struggled to jump start their offense in their Saturday evening match with the Clayton State Lakers. BC dropped the match 6-1 but didn’t trail until the 37th minute of play.

The Tornados kept things evened up at zero with the Lakers until a penalty kick was awarded to Clayton State. At 37:52, Leighton Fredericks broke the tie with the first scored of the game that left Brevard trailing 1-0. The match headed into the half with the Tornados facing a manageable deficit.

Johnathan Ray gave the Lakers a 2-0 lead when he put one past Brevard’s keeper off of a cross from Kevin Rodriguez in the 54th minute. At 66:44, the Tornados faced a bigger deficit when Roger Boniface netted one to giving Clayton State a 3-0 edge. The Lakers went on to add three more goals giving them a 6-0 lead heading into the final five minutes of the match.

Anthony Cardenas (Hubert, N.C.) gave BC their only goal of the match in the 88th minute. Cardenas fired one from 40 yards out to beat the Lakers keeper. He was set up by Niclas Stolt (Kaarina, Finland), it was Stolt’s first assist of the season.

Pauli Jussila (Valkeakoski, Finland) played all 90 minutes for Brevard in net. Clayton State took 30 shots at the freshman keeper, with 17 of them being on-target. The Tornados only managed to fire eight shots.

The BC men’s soccer team is in action again on Tuesday afternoon when they play host to the Cobras of Virginia Intermont. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
