Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College Football team will be coming off a bye week when they take the field on Saturday, heading to Charlotte, N.C. to take on CIAA opponent Johnson C. Smith at the Irwin Belk Complex.
This will be the first meeting between the two teams in the history of both programs. Last season, the Tornados and Golden Bulls had a common opponent in Edward Waters as Brevard defeated the Tigers, 51-6, while Johnson C. Smith won their contest, 27-14. However, neither team plays common opposition this season.
Throughout the first two weeks of the season, the Tornados have featured a run-heavy offense, gaining 558 yards on 123 carries, averaging 4.5 yards per attempt on the ground. When Brevard has taken to the air, the Tornados have completed 66.7 percent of their passing attempts, going eight of 12 for 162 yards in averaging 81.0 yards per game.
The Golden Bulls feature a balanced attack, rushing the ball 105 times during their first three games, while throwing the ball 114 times. On the ground, JCSU has gained 381 yards, averaging 3.6 yards per carry, while completing 55 passes for 791 yards on the season. The Golden Bulls average 263.7 yards per game in the air and will test the Tornados secondary.
Kelvin Jeter leads the Tornados rushing attack through the first two games of the season and is also the South Atlantic Conference leader on the ground, averaging 99.5 yards per game, while averaging 9.5 yards per carry. Jeter also has a season-long 63 yard carry. Fellow freshman Thadus Benton had a strong outing two weeks ago against Gardner-Webb, and is averaging 50.0 yards per game on the ground, while quarterback Michael Crumbaker has picked up four touchdowns on the ground this season as well to lead the team.
Through the air, the Tornados have turned to Eric Watts as the junior has caught four of the eight completions on the season for 93 yards and is among the SAC leaders in averaging 46.5 yards per game. Watts also lines up as the Tornados punter and is key to Brevard being recognized as the best NCAA Division II team in net punting, averaging 44.0 yards per attempt.
Defensively, Salonik Amos has led the Tornados through the first two games with 14 tackles (11 solo) and is among the SAC leaders in pass break-ups. Christian Lumbu leads the Tornados up front on the defensive line, averaging 5.5 tackles per contest, while also recording a half-tackle for loss. Lumbu also has a fumble recovery on the season. Linebacker Trey Jenkins also has reached double-digit tackles on the season with 10, while Rufus Jenkins and Demarcus Allen each have sacks on the season.
Johnson C. Smith was selected to finish 10th overall in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Preseason Poll and fifth among the 13 teams that participate in the CIAA, having finished their 2009 season 3-7 overall, 2-5 in conference play. This season, the Golden Bulls are currently 1-2, having fallen on the road to Elizabeth City State and North Carolina Central, while winning their home opener last week to West Virginia University Institute of Technology, 45-21.
Senior wide receiver Jeremy Franklin was selected to the Preseason All-CIAA team for the third consecutive season, coming off a season in which he led the team with 48 catches for 610 yards and five touchdowns. Through the early going this season, Franklin again has been the most targeted receiver for the Golden Bulls, catching 17 passes for 270 yards and two scores, averaging 90.0 yards per game.
Throwing the ball to Franklin this season is senior quarterback Ryan Carter and he has led the team through the first three games with 777 yards, going 54 of 111 with three interceptions and six touchdowns. When the Golden Bulls turn to the ground, Joshua James and Carter have carried the load, combining for 329 yards of JCSU’s 381 yards picked up on the ground.
Michael Coats leads Johnson C. Smith’s defense with 19 tackles on the season and one tackle for a loss, while Girard Miller and Darian Talley both have 16 tackles on the season. Miller also has an interception on the season, while four Golden Bulls have recorded sacks on the season.
Kickoff for the game between the Tornados and the Golden Bulls is set for 2 p.m. at the Irwin Belk Complex, located on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C.
