Tornados drop one to Lincoln Memorial, 3-0
Conner leads Brevard with 10 kills in the match
Harrogate, Tenn. - The Brevard College Tornados volleyball team concluded the first half of their South Atlantic Conference schedule this weekend, traveling to take on Lincoln Memorial on Saturday afternoon. The Tornados were led by Kortney Conner’s 10 kills, but fell to the Lady Railsplitters, 25-16, 25-17, 25-12.
Conner led Brevard (2-12, 0-9 SAC) on the afternoon with her 10 kills and contributed five digs to the overall effort. Jamie Atkinson contributed six kills and three blocks, while Ashlie Morrison added five kills and four digs. Jordei Osby led the Tornados at the net with four total blocks on the afternoon, while Rebecca Schoonover had 10 digs and Sydney Yeomans finished with nine.
The Lady Railsplitters (10-3, 6-3 SAC) were led by Kaitlin Walton and Ashley Knight as both recorded 11 kills on the afternoon. Lauren Kiwacka and Brittany Pugh combined for 32 set assists overall in the match, while Kristen Cantrell had a team high 10 digs for LMU.
The first set was knotted up at 9-9 through the first 18 points before the Lady Railsplitters went on a 6-2 run, going up 15-11 on three BC attack errors. Conner cut the lead back to within two at 15-13 on back-to-back kills, but Lincoln Memorial went up 21-14 after a Kiwacka ace on their way to closing out the first set with a 25-16 victory.
Lincoln Memorial took an early lead in the second set, going up 12-7 on Pugh’s serve before the Tornados responded, cutting the lead to within two at 13-11 after a Conner kill and an LMU attack error. The Lady Railsplitters went on another run, going up 21-14, before closing out the set on a Candace Richardson kill to go up 2-0.
In the third set, LMU recorded 11 of the first 14 points and withstood a late BC rally as the Tornados withstood match point on Cassie Smatana’s serve, before a service error gave the Lady Railsplitters the match.
The Tornados continue on the road on Wednesday, October 6th, as they travel to Charlotte, N.C. to take on Queens University of Charlotte. First serve between Brevard and the Royals is set for 6:30 p.m. in Ovens Athletic Center.
