Weston's victory in Short Track paces Brevard as they head to Nationals
The Tornados Cycling team took part in the Georgia Tech Mountain Bike race this past weekend. Led by Nate Weston’s victory in the Short Track and second place finishes by Tristan Cowie and Weston in the Cross Country event, the Tornados had a successful race weekend in Conyers, Ga.
Weston opened up the weekend on Saturday, outdistancing the field in the Short Track event in the Men’s B Group, defeating riders from Lees-McRae, Mars Hill and East Tennessee State among others. Cowie led the Tornados riders in the A Group, finishing seventh overall in the event, while Lewis Gaffney recorded a top 10 finish in the event. Scott Hoffner finished just outside the top 10, coming in 12th overall, while Brian Underwood finished 19th. Matt St. Marie (22nd) and Kody Adams (24th) rounded out the men’s group for the Tornados. Caroline Decosimo and Morgan Sykes took the field for Brevard in the Women’s A Group Short Track race, with Decosimo earning a podium finish, coming in fourth, while Sykes crossed the line in 14th.
Thomas Bagnal led Brevard in the Dual Slalom Men’s A Group, finishing fourth overall behind Geoffrey Fryer from ETSU. Cowie placed in the top 10, coming in ninth overall, while St. Marie finished 14th. Park Baker and Adams went back-to-back at 17th and 18th, while Asher Blackmore and James Chaput rounded out the group at 24th and 25th respectively. Heath Wilson took on the field in the Men’s B Group, coming in second overall, while on the women’s side, Decosimo finished sixth overall with a time of 31.97, while Sykes came in 12th.
On Sunday, Cowie finished second overall in the Cross Country event, while Hoffner came in ninth. Gaffney finished 11th overall and was joined in the top 15 by Underwood as he came in 14th. Adams came in 21st, while St. Marie and Bagnal rounded out the group placed in the field by Coach Thad Walker. Weston took second overall in the Men’s B Group for his second podium finish of the afternoon to conclude the men’s side of the events for the weekend.
Decosimo finished second in the Women’s A Group behind Union College’s Rachel Millsop, while Sykes recorded a top 10 finish with a time of 2:08:50.
The Tornados continue on the road on October 15 as they begin their title defense at the 2010 Mountain Bike National Championships.
