Varley and Jeter named the September Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the Month
Brevard, N.C. - Bailey Varley and Kelvin Jeter have been named the Sports Spot Brevard College Student-Athletes of the Month for the month of September as recognized on WSQL 1240 AM on Wednesday afternoon. The award is presented by Sports Spot, in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department.
Varley, a junior forward on the women’s soccer team, led the Tornados in the month of September with three goals and two assists in accumulating eight points. Varley, a 2010 captain under Coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara, started in all nine games in September at the forward position. She recorded one of the best performances in her collegiate career on September 2nd in the season opener against Erskine, scoring a hat trick in the match against the Flying Fleet in Brevard’s 5-3 victory. Varley also recorded assists against Converse on September 8th and Clayton State on September 11th as the Tornados went 3-5-1 in the opening month of the season.
Jeter, a freshman slot on the football team, led the Tornados and the South Atlantic Conference through the month of September with 500 rushing yards, averaging 125.0 yards per game as Brevard went 3-1. Jeter added four rushing touchdowns in the month and had a key 48 yard reception in Brevard’s victory over Johnson C. Smith. He also set a new BC record with a 95 yard carry for a score on September 25th against Southern Virginia and is the team’s rushing leader at this point of the season as Brevard boasts the NCAA Division II’s top-rated rushing attack.
These two athletes will be presented with action shots recognizing their award, which will be displayed in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium for the entire school year. A total of nine female and male Sports Spot Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2010-2011 academic year. The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the Brevard College head coaches and administrative staff.
