BC Football Ready For First Road Contest of 2008

The Tornados will take on Chowan University in Murfreesboro, N.C. at 12 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

Brevard, N.C. – The first road trip is the longest road trip of the 2008 season for the Brevard College men’s football team, as Head Coach Paul Hamilton and his squad will travel close to seven hours across the state of North Carolina to Murfreesboro to face off with the Hawks of Chowan University on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m.

This is the third meeting between the Tornados and the Hawks with the Tornados holding a 2-0 series advantage.  BC defeated Chowan 10-5 in Murfreesboro in 2006, the football programs first ever victory since its establishment in 2006.  Last season the Tornados blew through the Hawks at home, defeating Chowan 45-7 in front of very enthusiastic crowd in Brevard Memorial Stadium.

The Tornados are coming off their first win of the 2008 season and will look to continue to improve on both sides of the ball this Saturday afternoon.  The Tornados rushed for 146 yards on 44 carries, picking up two touchdowns by way of the legs of running back John Taylor versus Pembroke a week ago, and will look for the same this week.

The Tornados defense was strong against the run last week, holding Pikeville to only 48 rushing yards for the game.  Brevard also forced three fumbles, recovering two, and picked off two passes to help put the offense in great position throughout the game.  BC will face a similar style offense and quarterback this week, as Chowan’s Webster leads the team in both rushing yards and passing yards on the year.

Junior quarterback Kye Hamilton played well despite the two interceptions, opening the field up by connecting on over 50 percent of his pass attempts for the game including a 36-yard touchdown pass to Donald Hudson in the third quarter.

Again the running game will be put on the shoulders of senior John Taylor, as Taylor had perhaps one of his best overall games in a Tornados uniform last week, rushing 24 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

Down back Desmond Wilson played well in the fullback spot, pounding forward behind the offensive line and through the defensive line for short gains which opened up the running lanes off the ends and outside the tackles for Taylor and the BC slot receivers.

The Tornados will look to continue to improve its consistency on the offensive side, continuing to put forth a balanced attack as well as protect the ball.

The Hawks are 0-2 out of the gates in 2008, struggling to put points on the board losing in the season opener to Elizabeth City State 55-3 and then last week to Saint Paul’s 13-0.

Offensively the Hawks have scored just three points in their first two games and have yet to find the end zone.  Chowan has recorded 334 yards on the ground and 224 yards through the air thus far this season, while picking up nine more first downs (32) then their opponents.  Quarterback CJ Webster is leading the way for the Hawks in both rushing and passing, as he has rushed 21 times for 121 yards, an average of 60.5 per game, and has passed for 202 yards on 22-of-71 pass attempts with five interceptions.

Webster’s go to guy has been James Fox, as the wide receiver has eight catches for 114 yards over the first two games.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Hawks are allowing an average of 310.0 yards and 34 points per game, with 55 points coming by way of Elizabeth City State in the season opener.  The Hawks have forced two turnovers this season, an area that has bothered the Tornados some in their first two contests.

Senior linebacker Jomo Brown is leading the way with 12 tackles on the year, while fellow senior linebacker Quinten Ladson has 10 tackles, five of which are for a loss, and two sacks.

The kickoff time is slated for a 12 p.m., a high noon start, at Garrison Stadium in Murfreesboro, N.C.
