Brendle and Fritz score 10 in opening season loss to N. Georgia
Lindsay Brendle and Candice Fritz were each able to drop 10 points in loss to the Saints
Morrow, Ga. - The Brevard College women’s basketball team fell in their season opener to the North Georgia Saints as they compete in the Chick-Fil-A Southeast Regional Challege being hosted by Clayton State. Brevard fell by a three point margin 61-58 in their first game of the 2010-11 season.
The Tornados were able to jump out to an early 7-0 lead thanks to two baskets from Candice Fritz (Northeast, MD) and a three-pointer hit by one of Brevard’s sharp shooters Amber Roberts (Asheville, N.C.). The Saints scored four unanswered points and were able to climb back within the first ten minutes of the first half as it was 8-7 at the ten minute marker.
Brevard continued to hold on to the lead through much of the first half as they led by as many as six points during with 6:48 left in the first half of play. North Georgia was able to rally and take a one point lead as the game headed into half-time with a score of 25-24. Roberts led Brevard in the first half with six points after going 2-3 from the three point line. Fritz wasn’t far behind as she put in a pair of buckets plus a free-throw for five points.
The Tornados were able to come out and take an early in the second half, as Amanda Whitaker (Asheville, N.C.) hit a jumper within the first minute of play putting Brevard up 26-25. After exchanging baskets a few times with the Tornados, the Saints went on a six point run taking a 36-30 lead with 15 minutes left to play.
Brevard was able to make another run and take a 40-38 lead after Alyssa Cutshaw (Thomasville, N.C.) hit a three pointer at the 11:20 mark. Following Cutshaw’s three point basket, Brevard and North Georgia continued to trade-off scoring baskets with North Georgia taking the lead in many of the exchanges.
Holli Flippo (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) nailed a three-point basket with just under two minutes remaining in the game giving the Tornados a 58-57 lead. However, it was also Brevard’s final field goal of the game as the Saints were able to convert three of four free throw attempts in the final minutes to give them the 61-58 edge for the win.
Janyce Ealey of North Georgia led all scorers with 12 points in the win over the Tornados, while Jessica Howard was able to pull down 14 rebounds for the Saints. For Brevard, Fritz and Lindsay Brendle led the way offensively scoring 10 points a piece. Brendle was able to hit six of eight from the free throw line while Fritz shot 60% from the field.
The Tornados fall to 0-1 on the season with the loss, and look to have their hands full on Saturday evening as well when they take on the nationally ranked Lakers of Clayton State. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Clayton St.
