Flippo and Roper named December Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the MonthJanuary 12, 2011
Brevard, N.C. - Holli Flippo and Josh Roper of the Brevard College Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams have been named the Sports Spot Brevard College Student-Athletes of the Month for the month of December as recognized on WSQL 1240 AM on Wednesday afternoon. The award is presented by Sports Spot in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department.
Flippo was voted the Female Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Athletic Head Coaching staff over fellow nominees and teammates, Micheala Watkins and Amanda Whitaker.
Flippo led the Tornados in both games in the month of December, leading the Tornados in a pair of road competitions against Anderson University on December 4th and Tusculum College on December 30th. For the month, Flippo averaged 9.5 points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game, shooting 37.5 percent from the floor, 36.3 percent from behind the arc and 75.0 percent from the free throw line. She scored 11 points and pulled down three rebounds in the game against Anderson, while scoring eight points, hitting two three-pointers, while pulling down four rebounds against Tusculum. For the 2010-2011 season, Flippo leads the Tornados in rebounding with 4.9 per game. Flippo is also among the SAC statistical leaders in scoring, steals, three-point percentage and three-pointers made for the season.
Roper was voted the Men’s Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching staff over fellow nominees and teammates, Gaither Hendrix and Drew Schauss.
Roper led the Tornados to 3-0 performance in the month of December, averaging 24.7 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game and 2.0 assists per game, as well as 1.7 steals per contest. Roper achieved double-figures scoring in each game, including a month-best 30 points for Brevard on December 4th against Anderson in the Tornados come-from-behind victory. Roper also recorded two games scoring over 20 points on the month and pulled down a season-high nine rebounds against Anderson. For the season, the senior guard leads the SAC in scoring with 23.5 points per game and is among the SAC leaders in seven other statistical categories.
These two athletes will be presented with action shots recognizing their award, which will be displayed in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium for the entire school year. A total of nine female and male Sports Spot Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2010-2011 academic year. The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the athletic department staff.
