Daniels records first win of 2011 season in victory over Alderson-Broaddus
Brevard, N.C. - The Tornados scored in each of the first five innings, including batting around in the bottom of the second in plating six runs as Brevard received a quality start from Brennan Daniels in completing the series sweep over the visiting Alderson-Broaddus Battlers, 15-3.
Randy O’Dell hit a bases-clearing, three RBI double to lead the Tornados as three players had multiple hits in the game as Brevard improved to 3-3 on the season. Daniels improved to 1-0 on the season, pitching six innings and striking out six, while walking none.
Mitch Roy and Colin Mitchell led Alderson-Broaddus (0-3) as both had two hit games and Mitchell scored twice. Nate Wright picked up the loss for the Battlers, lasting one-third of an inning, giving up two runs, while walking two.
After Daniels retired the Battlers in the first inning, the Tornados struck first in the bottom of the inning. Ron Patterson and Ethan Pressley drew back-to-back walks with one out, paving way for Zack Merriken as the junior catcher brought Patterson home with a double to the right center gap. Two pitches later, Pressley scored as Wright balked on the mound, giving Brevard the early 2-0 lead.
Daniels set the Battlers down 1-2-3 in the second inning and the Tornados struck quickly in the second. Five hits, one error and a pitching change later, Brevard went up 8-0 before Steven Peters was able to get the Battlers out of the inning by forcing Zak Beard to hit into a double play.
The Tornados added single runs in both the third and fourth innings as Merriken drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Kameron Armacost, and Champ Stuart hit a sacrifice fly to straightaway centerfield to score Brett Brinson as the lead grew to 10-0 through four.
Alderson-Broaddus put one on the board in the top of the fifth, cutting into the lead. Mitchell reached on a one-out infield single and moved to second as Bobby Mapes reached base on an error. Nick Canterbury followed with a base hit to right center, driving home Mitchell. Daniels would limit the Battlers to just the one run though, retiring Roy and Marc Timmons on strikes.
Brevard added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Kramer Clark singled home Pressley and Merriken came around to score on a passed ball as the Tornados went up 12-1.
Alderson-Broaddus added two in the sixth as Mapes drove a double in the left center gap, scoring Mitchell and Justin Anderson.
The Tornados closed out the scoring in the bottom of the seventh as O’Dell cleared the bases with a two-out double down the left field line, scoring Clark, Alex Bedenbaugh and Aaron Reese.
The Battlers loaded the bases in both the seventh and the eighth, but the Tornados relievers, Josh Case, Michael Bradley and Casey Burnette were able to record scoreless innings as Brevard closed out the weekend with the 15-3 victory.
The Tornados head on the road next week, traveling to Tigerville, S.C. and North Greenville University to take on the Crusaders on Tuesday, February 15th. First pitch on Ashmore Field is set for 2 p.m.
