Roper leads all scorers with 21 points in loss
Newberry, S.C. - 11 Newberry players scored in the game, overcoming a 21 point performance by Josh Roper as Brevard fell on the road in Eleazer Arena on Wednesday evening, 81-72.
Roper was seven of 23 from the floor in the contest as Brevard (13-12, 8-9 SAC) saw their four game winning streak end after shooting 37.5 percent (24-64) from the floor. Gaither Hendrix added 19 points and three assists, while Josh Jordan added 11 points and six rebounds as Brevard fell to Newberry for the second time in the 2010-2011 season.
Brandon Riley scored 17 points off the bench to lead the Wolves (13-12, 8-9 SAC), hitting nine of 14 free throws as Newberry scored 23 points from the free throw line in the contest. Tony Davis recorded a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds and Ray Robinson added 10 points and nine rebounds as Newberry held the 50-34 rebounding advantage in the contest in completing the season sweep.
Brevard built an eight point lead halfway through the first half as Hendrix completed the three-point play with a free throw at the 13:10 mark to give the Tornados the 14-6 advantage. The Wolves would claw their way back into the game with a 17-2 run, taking a 10 point lead at 32-22 following a dunk by Brunes Charles with 4:46 and Newberry would take a 38-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Out of the break, Brevard would cut the deficit all the way down to one point following an 11-2 run to open the period. Jordan scored seven points in the first four minutes of the second half and Drew Schauss closed out the run with a layup off a Roper assist to put the score at 43-42 with 15:48 to play. The Wolves would recover with a run of their own to go back up by double digits and though the Tornados would keep it within striking distance, Newberry closed out the game with the 81-72 victory.
Brevard will close out the 2010-2011 regular season on Saturday, February 26th, at home in Boshamer Gymnasium as they welcome Wingate University to Brevard, N.C. Pregame festivities include recognizing the Tornados four seniors: Josh Roper, Whitney Galloway, Josh Jordan and Donald Hudson. Tipoff for the game between the Bulldogs and the Tornados is scheduled for 4 p.m.
