Tornados split with Cobras, 3-1 & 4-1February 26, 2011
Brevard was able to pick up the first of the doubleheader in Bristol
Bristol, Va. - The Brevard College softball team split a double header with NAIA foe Virginia Intermont College on Saturday afternoon. Brevard was able to come back from a 1-0 deficit and score three sixth inning runs to win the opener 3-1, but was unable to come back from an early 3-0 hole and fell 4-1 in the second game of the twin bill.
The Tornados moved to 10-4 on the season after splitting with the Cobras. Virginia Intermont is now 2-4 on the year.
Game One: Brevard 3, Virginia Intermont 1
Virginia Intermont opened up the scoring in the first game when Heather Odle hit a leadoff home run to put the Cobras on top 1-0 in the second inning.
Brevard was unable to answer until the top of the sixth. Chelsi Mallory (Mechanicsville, Va.) led off the inning with a walk. She was able to advance to second when Kayla Clemens (Sebring, Fla.) laid down a bunt base hit. With runners at first and second, Becca Curlee (Eagle River, Alaska) advanced the runner a base with a bunt base hit of her own. Sarah Carlos (Eagle River, Alaska) came to the plate with the bases juiced and hit a two-run single to right centerfield putting Brevard up 2-1. Maddie Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C.) stepped in with runners on the corners and hit a groundout scoring Curlee from third to give the Tornados the final 3-1 edge.
Martika Elmore (Fayetteville, N.C.) was the Tornados starter. Elmore went the distance, pitching all seven innings in the win, allowing just one run on four hits. She advanced to 5-2 after striking out 13 in her seventh complete game of the season. Ashlynn Scott was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs on eight hits.
At the plate, Carlos and Clemens led the way for Brevard. Each had a pair of base knocks, while Clemens scored a run and Carlos delivered two RBI.
Game Two: Virginia Intermont 4, Brevard 1
In the second game Virginia Intermont jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. They plated their first run when Heather Odle hit a single up the middle scoring Kelli Porter. The Cobras added two more when Melissa Hudgins hit a two-run double to right centerfield, plating both Heather and Haley Odle.
Brevard was able to score one run in the loss. Kayla Dorsey (West Palm Beach, Fla.) had an RBI groundout in the top of third, scoring Meredith Davenport (High Point, N.C.), making it 3-1.
The Cobras scored one more insurance run in the bottom half of the third when Porter hit a leadoff homer to make it 4-1, which was the final tally.
Alyssa Miller (Davie, Fla.) was charged with her second loss of the season, falling to 5-2. Miller was touched for four runs on seven hits in four innings of work, while striking out six. Elmore finished out the game for Brevard going the final two innings, and added three more strikeouts. Melissa Hudgins picked up the win for Virginia Intermont. She pitched all seven innings and surrendered one unearned run on four hits.
The Tornados take the field again on Sunday, February 27th, as they host the Pfeiffer Falcons. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the Brevard College Softball Field.
