Ally Davenport drives in winning run with sacrifice in the ninth
Florence, S.C. – The Brevard College softball team picked up a win in their opener of the Patriot Invitational. The Tornados defeated Coker College 3-2 in extra innings on Friday afternoon.
With the win, Brevard moved to 16-5 on the season with the win.
Brevard opened up the scoring in the first inning. Brittany Fowler (Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA) led off with a single to right field. Kayla Dorsey (West Palm Beach, Fla.) walked, moving Fowler to second. Chelsi Mallory (Mechanicsville, Va.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third bringing Kayla Clemens (Sebring, Fla.) to the plate. Clemens ripped a fly ball to left field. The left fielder was able to reel in the fly ball, but it was deep enough to bring Fowler home on the sacrifice.
The Tornados added to their 1-0 lead in the third. With two outs, Clemens roped a single into left field that scored Fowler from second, making it 2-0 in favor of Brevard.
Coker was able to answer back in the fourth by scoring one run on double by Stacy Burr. Burr’s knock scored Bri Jacobs, making it 2-1 in favor of the Tornados.
The Cobras were able to tie things up in the sixth when Gina Easler hit a solo homer, nodding things up at 2-2.
The Tornados placed Brittany Jones (Fort Mill, S.C.) on second in the ninth inning. Jones moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt by Meredith Davenport (High Point, N.C.). Ally Davenport (High Point, N.C.) drove in Jones in the next at-bat with a single up the middle giving Brevard the 3-2 edge to knock off Coker.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Cobras had a runner on third with two outs, when Martika Elmore (Fayetteville, N.C.) uncorked a wild pitch, hitting one of the support poles at the backstop, before rolling back to catcher Mallory. The Cobra runner broke toward the plate when the ball hit the backstop, but due to the suddenness of the ball’s return to the plate, was caught in a rundown and was tagged out, ending the game.
Elmore picked up the win against Coker as she moved to 8-3 on the season. Elmore struck out 10 and was touched for two runs, one earned in the nine inning win.
The Tornados continue their run in the Patriot Invitational on March 12th as they take one host school Francis Marion University and #17 Rollins College.
