Tornads split SAC opener, 3-0 & 1-0March 18, 2011
Brevard was able to pick up their first South Atlantic Conference win in game two, 1-0
Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College softball team split in the South Atlantic Conference opening doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Tornados dropped the first game to Anderson University 3-0, but they were able to salvage the finale by winning 1-0.
The Tornados moved to 19-8 on the season, and 1-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Trojans are now 18-8 overall and 1-1 in the SAC.
Game One: Anderson 3, Brevard 0
Brevard fell in the opener by a score of 3-0. The Tornados fell behind in the third inning when Martika Elmore (Fayetteville, N.C.) allowed a single through the right side to lead off the inning. Following Danielle Swygert’s single, Elmore walked three straight batters giving Anderson a 1-0 lead when Swygert crossed the plate. Elmore walked a fourth straight giving Anderson a 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded and no outs, Elmore was able to pitch out the jam by getting three straight outs.
The Tornados entered the fifth inning still trailing 2-0 and Abby Child led off the bottom half with a double to left centerfield. Child was able to move up to third on a wild pitch and with one-out Charlotte Sieber reached on an error bringing Child in to score the final run of the game as the Trojans edged Brevard 3-0.
Martika Elmore was the Tornados starter in the opener. She surrender three runs, two earned on five hits in six innings of work. Elmore was able to sit down 10 Trojans on strikes, but fell to 9-5 after being charged with the loss.
Game Two: Brevard 1, Anderson 0
The night cap of the twinbill with the Trojans remained scoreless until the final inning of play. Brevard was able to score the only run of the game when Sarah Carlos (Eagle River, Alaska) hit a solo shot, her second homer of the season, putting Brevard up on-top 1-0 in the top of the seventh inning.
The one run was all starter, Martika Elmore, needed to pick up her 10th win of the season. Elmore moved to 10-5 after pitching her fifth shutout of the season. She went all seven innings for the Tornados and struck out three in the Tornados first South Atlantic Conference victory of the 2011 campaign.
The Tornados take a few days off before returning to the diamond. Brevard will continue their SAC schedule on Tuesday, March 22nd when they return to the Brevard College Softball Field to take on the Newberry Wolves.
