Smith suffers loss for Brevard in series opener
Salisbury, N.C. - Randy O’Dell hit a solo home run in the top of the first, but the offense was not enough for the Tornados as they fell to #23 Catawba on Friday afternoon in the conference series opener, 6-1.
Casey Smith (2-6) took the loss for Brevard (11-18, 3-12 SAC), pitching 6.1 innings while striking out five. Nick Lomascolo (6-1) went the distance for the Indians (23-7, 13-3 SAC), retiring 12 Tornados on strikes in the win.
Brevard struck first in the top of the first inning as O’Dell drove a two-out, 2-1 offering from Lomascolo over the right field fence of Newman Park to put the Tornados up 1-0 early.
Catawba evened the score in the second as John Neese deposited a pitch over the left field fence, before taking the lead in the third on Austin Moyer’s two-run shot.
The Tornados threatened to take control of the game in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with one out as Christian Christopoulos reached after getting hit by a pitch and Champ Stuart and Kramer Clark hit back-to-back singles. Lomascolo was able to escape the inning without allowing a run though, as he retired O’Dell on a foul out to the first baseman and set Zack Merriken down on strikes to end the inning.
The Indians plated three insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh as Josh Hohn brought in Julio Zubillaga with a base hit and Chris Dula brought in a pair with a single up the middle to end the scoring.
Due to the threat of rain, the doubleheader scheduled to begin tomorrow afternoon between Brevard and Catawba has been moved up with first pitch of game one at Newman Park scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
