Peacock's first goal leads Tornados past Crusaders, 1-0September 17, 2008
Douglas contributes with first shutout of season
Brevard, N.C. - The
BC sophomore Nikki Peacock hammered home the game-winning goal off the pass from teammate Kelly Harris to lead the Tornados past the Crusaders, who fall to 4-2 on the season.
The only true chance either team had to score in the first half came in the 40th minute, when Brevard's Latoshia Hopewell received a fantastic through pass and possesed the ball behind the North Greenville backline. But Crusader keeper Jessica Binkley came off her line to poke the ball away before Hopewell could launch a shot, keeping the game scoreless through one period.
The Tornados finally got a breakthrough in the 2nd half when a Tornado cross bounced out of bounds off of Binkley. The ensuing corner kick was taken by Harris, who bounced a ball through the box to an unmarked Peacock. The Canadian put the ball in the net in the 58th minute of the game to put Brevard in front, 1-0.
The Crusaders fought hard to tie the game, holding possession on the BC side of the field for most of the 2nd half, but were unable to score. Junior Danielle Duff had one last chance for NGU as time expired but her desperation shot was corralled by goalie Sydney Douglas.
For the game, Douglas faced 11 shots, saving all four shots on goal in her first shutout of the season. At the other end, Binkley faced 14 Tornado shots and saved five of the six shots on goal.
The Tornados are back in action next week as they host Southern Wesleyan University at the Brevard College Soccer Field at 4 p.m. The Crusaders return home to host
