Nelson hired as Brevard Head Men's and Women's Golf Coach

Former BC Coach returns to take over the reigns of the Tornados program

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College Athletic Department and Interim Athletic Director Juan Mascaro are pleased to welcome back a familiar face as they announce David Nelson has accepted the position as the new Brevard College Head Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach.

"It gives me great pleasure to welcome back Coach Nelson in the role of our men’s and women’s golf coach," said Mascaro. "David has a proven track record as a golf coach and we look forward to him coming back and helping our programs return to the ranks of the tops in the South Atlantic Conference in the years to come."

Nelson served as the BC Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach from 2004-2009 where he successfully transitioned the golf programs from the NAIA to the NCAA Division II. He was the first full-time golf coach in BC history and was key in the establishment of the women’s golf team in 2008.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be back on campus and part of the Brevard family once again," said Nelson. "I had the privilege to work under our new president, Dr. Joyce, at Union College. He’s an extraordinary leader and a perfect choice to lead Brevard College for years to come."

During his time at Brevard, his men’s team finished ranked nationally in the NAIA in 2007 and he had the No. 1 ranked freshman class in the nation in 2007 and the No. 4 ranked freshman class in the nation in 2009 according to Golfstat. His teams won 17 tournaments over a span of five years and under his tutelage the Tornados established the school record for lowest team stroke average (297) in the history of the program in the 2008-2009 season, tied for lowest in the SAC for the season.

Nelson also served as the BC Men’s Soccer Coach from 2004-2006 where he helped turn the program around, recruiting and coaching the program’s first NAIA All-American student-athlete, among other things. He also successfully recruited the largest freshman class in the history of the program in the 2005 season, including a mix of international and domestic athletes, stabilizing the program and facilitating the hiring of a new coach to lead the program in future years.

Prior to his time in Brevard, Nelson served as the Athletic Director of Union College in Barbourville, Ky. from 2000-2003. Nelson helped oversee the transition of Union into the Appalachian Athletic Conference and was also instrumental in a successful building renovation on the campus of Union, resulting in a relocation of all athletic department offices, training room, locker rooms and a conference room. He also established the ACE program at Union, enhancing student-athlete participation in class and was influential in redesigning a fundraising approach in the athletic department.

"As far as the golf programs, we will strive to get them back on track as soon as possible," commented Nelson. "The Brevard area has always been an attractive location for golf recruits. I anticipate being competitive within the SAC immediately. We have an excellent returning class of athletes, as well as a few new faces we hope will contribute right away as we prepare to begin this 2011-2012 season."
