Tornados turned away by Tusculum, 3-0September 28, 2011
Webster records four saves in loss to Pioneers
Greeneville, Tenn. - The Tornados challenged early and often but the Pioneers found the back of the net as Brevard fell in South Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday evening at Pioneer Field, 3-0.
Lizzie Graham and Bailey Varley attacked first for the Tornados (2-7, 0-4 SAC) in the 20th minute, but Graham saw her shot blocked and Varley’s offering was saved by Tusculum (5-3, 1-0 SAC) goalkeeper Marissa Williams, as the Pioneers were first to score in the match as Michelle Meade took advantage of a miscue in the Tornados backline to place a shot in the upper left corner of the net to put the Pioneers up 1-0 at the 33:45 mark.
Jamie Bundy nearly matched the score a minute later as the sophomore from Platte City, Mo. launched a free kick from 40 yards out that cleared the defenders and nearly found the net before a leaping Williams tipped the ball away, ending the threat.
The Pioneers extended their lead in the second half after a Brevard penalty in the goalkeeper box gave Tusculum a free kick and Claire Duncan drilled it home at the 52:34 mark to put the hosts up 2-0.
Tusculum added to the total as Patience Leonard received passes from Nikki Arthur and Jenique Thombs and beat BC goalkeeper Brittany Webster at the 77:01 mark to put the Pioneers up 3-0.
Bundy and Varley added shots in the final ten minutes in attempt to put Brevard on the scoreboard, but their shots were turned aside by Williams as the Tornados fell on the road in conference action, 3-0.
Brevard returns home to the BC Soccer Field as they welcome SAC rival Mars Hill College on Saturday, October 1st. Kickoff between the Tornados and the Lions is set for 4 p.m.
