Fincher scores consolation goal as Tornados fall to Newberry, 5-1

Brevard, N.C. - Host Brevard College fell to visiting Newberry College, 5-1, in a South Atlantic Conference battle. For the season, Newberry improves to 3-5, 2-1 in the SAC, while Brevard falls to 4-5, 0-2 in the conference.


Less than three minutes into the game, Newberry jumped up 1-0, as Lora Moore scored off the touch pass from Sara Griffith at pointblank range, after a rebound off Brevard goalkeeper, Sydney Douglas.


Bailey Varley nearly answered for the Tornados in the eighth minute but her shot from nearly 30 yards out was saved by Newberry goalkeeper Emily Rhoades.

The rest of the first half was mainly played on the Brevard half of the field, with Newberry constantly threatening, but unable to get a shot past Douglas. For the half, the Tornados were outshot 12-2, with Douglas making six saves.


Less than a minute into the second half, Newberry increased their lead to 2-0 off a brilliant play by Mandi Butler. Butler received the ball near mid-field and ran through the defense before burying a shot in the back of the net.


In the 54th minute, the lead was pushed to 3-0 as Sara Geisman’s corner kick sailed over the wall of Brevard defenders to an unmarked Amberly Fowler who put the shot in the goal.


Butler
added a second goal in the 66th minute when she headed the ball past a diving Douglas off the pass from Griffith.


Brevard finally got on the board in the 70th minute, when following a Newberry foul, Ashley Fincher put in the direct kick from 30 yards out over the outstretched arms of Rhoades making the game, 4-1.


Douglas made a great save in the 76th minute, throwing her body in front of shot by a wide-open Butler, preventing the hat-trick. However, Newberry added a final goal in the 87th minute on a direct kick by Najla Bubtana to finish the scoring.


For the game, Brevard was outshot 23-5, with Douglas saving eight of the 13 shots on goal. On the other end, Rhoades and Megan Hrenchir faced five shots and saved one.


Liz Stojetz’s Tornados are back in action Saturday as they travel to Greeneville, Tenn. to face Tusculum. Kickoff time is scheduled for 5 p.m. Newberry is also in action on Saturday as they head home to face Wingate with a start time of 4 p.m.
