BC Volleyball Falls To Newberry 3-0 on Friday NightSeptember 26, 2008
Newberry, S.C. – The Brevard College women’s volleyball team tried to win their second straight South Atlantic Conference match on Friday night, but fell on the road to Newberry College 3-0 (15-25, 16-25, 17-25).
The loss drops the Tornados to 8-6 and 1-3 in the conference, while Newberry moves to 8-5 and 2-1 in the SAC.
In set one, the Tornados took an early 2-0 lead on a kill by junior middle hitter Brooke Seaman, but couldn’t pull away as Newberry stormed back to outscore the Tornados 25-13 over the remainder of the opening set to pick up the 1-0 lead.
Again set two saw the Tornados score the first point, but Newberry went on a roll to take a 10-5 lead on a kill by Priscila Sales. The Tornados stormed back with five straight unanswered points capped off by a Seaman kill to cut the Newberry lead to one at 11-10.
Yet the set of runs continued, as Newberry answered with an 11 to 4 run to take a 22-14, their biggest lead of the set before a Newberry error stopped the run and put the score at 22-15. The two teams then traded points before Newberry scored the last two points of the set on a Sales kill and a Brianna Blakely service ace to win the set 25-16 and take a 2-0 advantage.
Down 2-0, the Tornados came out of the gates slow in set three, as Newberry jumped out to an 11-5 lead. Yet the Tornados did not go away as BC cut the lead to 18-14 on a kill by freshman Chelsea Larsen, a Newberry error and a Seaman kill.
However, Newberry answered with a 7-3 run to close out the set with a 25-17 and win the match 3-0.
BC was led by Seaman’s 11 kills, one service ace, one solo block and two block assists. Senior setter Jami Perry had 15 assists with five digs, while three other players – Chelsey Trojan, Cori Emory and Rebecca Schoonover – all posted five digs apiece.
For Newberry, Lorena Maia led the way with 10 kills, one solo block and three block assists, while Sales had nine kills and one block assist. Setter Blakely had 29 assists for the three set match.
The Tornados will not have long to rest, as BC will play Wingate University in Wingate, N.C. tomorrow night at 7 p.m. Newberry’s next contest will be on September 30, as they will step out of SAC play and travel to Central, S.C. to play Southern Wesleyan University.
