Freshman records two first half goals and an assist in win
Brevard, N.C. - Felipe Mendonca scored two first half goals and Tommi Rasinmaki and Marcelo Betcer added scores in the second half as the Tornados topped visiting St. Andrews College on Saturday afternoon at the BC Soccer Field, 4-1.
Mendonca came out firing in the opening minutes for Brevard (2-11-1), recording a pair of shots in the first three minutes before finding the back of the net at the 6:25 mark, collecting the throw-in from Garrett Stone in front of the goal and drilling it past St. Andrews (2-11) goalkeeper Corey Francis to give Brevard the early lead.
The Tornados added a second score in the first 45 minutes as Mendonca again found the back of the net, receiving the cross from Patrick Urmson and one-timing his shot into the upper right corner of the net to give Brevard the 2-0 lead at the 28:35 mark as Brevard peppered the St. Andrews net, outshooting the Knights 11-1 in the first half.
Brevard added to the lead in the second half on a collective effort as Urmson forwarded a ball to the middle of the field where it was redirected by Mendonca. Rasinmaki collected the pass and beat the Knights’ keeper in a one-on-one situation, hitting it off the left post into the back of the net to put Brevard up 3-0 at the 67:38 mark.
The Knights went on the attack as Curtis Kiyabu and Dennis Schardt fired shots, challenging BC goalkeeper Pauli Jussila before Schardt cut into the Brevard lead, connecting on a goal at the 77:27 mark off the assist from Nowell Worley to put the score at 3-1.
Brevard responded quickly as Joel Jalanne intercepted a Knights’ clear attempt, moving the ball up the left side of the box before flipping it up into the air toward Betcer, and the freshman headed the ball into the net at the 80:10 mark to give the Tornados their final score of the game at 4-1.
Edwin Mwangi fired two late shots for St. Andrews, but Jussila deflected one offering and the other sailed high over the net as Brevard topped St. Andrews on Saturday afternoon, 4-1.
The Tornados return to the road as they travel to Bristol, Va. on Wednesday, October 19th as they take on Virginia Intermont College. Kickoff between the Tornados and the Cobras is set for 7 p.m.
