Kallay and Weisenfluh record titles at Mars Hill

Brevard gears up in final competition before conference championships

Mars Hill, N.C. - Willis Kallay took home the individual title in the Mountain Cross event and Kate Weisenfluh continued her success with the women’s A Downhill title as the Tornados took on the field at the Mars Hill Mountain events on October 1st and 2nd.

Lewis Gaffney led Brevard in the opening Short Track event in the men’s A group, finishing on the podium third overall, while Scott Hoffner was also in the top 10, placing eighth overall. Bryan Underwood tied for 11th overall while Kody Adams was 16th and Keith Marek rounded out the group in 22nd. Brandon Milet led the Tornados in the men’s B group, finishing 17th among the riders.

On the women’s side, Morgan Sykes finished just outside the top ten in 12th place in the women’s A group, while Madison Capps was 18th overall. Liza Fortenberry represented the Tornados in the Women’s B event, recording the top 10 finish.

In the Mountain Cross, Kenneth Banner, Asher Blackmore and Trey Cassell were all in the top 10 of the men’s A group with Banner landing on the podium in second overall. Tripp Bagnal finished 16th overall in the event to round out the group for Coach Brian Sheedy. Kallay led four riders in the men’s B group, recording the first individual title of the weekend for the Tornados, while Kyle Stallings was also on the podium after his fifth place result. Kody Hughes was also in the top 10, while Duncan Miller was just outside, placing 12th overall.

Kate Weisenfluh narrowly missed on the podium finish taking sixth overall in the women’s A group, while Capps and Sykes finished back-to-back in 11th and 12th place in the event.

Bagnal led a strong Tornados group in their top discipline on the weekend, the Downhill event, finishing on the podium in the men’s A group, while Park Baker also was in the top 10, placing eighth overall. Cassell and Blackmore were also in the top 20 at 14th and 18th respectively, while Banner finished 29th overall to round out the group. Kallay, Miller and Hughes finished second, third and fourth respectively to crowd the podium in the men’s B group, while Stallings finished in the top 15 with a 14th place result.

Weisenfluh continued her dominance on the downhill course this season, taking the individual title in the women’s A group, while Capps rounded out the group placing 13th overall.

In the lone Sunday event, the Cross Country event, Hoffner led the way for the Tornados, finishing on the podium in the men’s A group with his third place finish. Adams and Marek were both in the top 30, placing 25th and 27th overall, while Bryan Underwood and Gaffney were unable to finish on the course. Brandon Milet led the Tornados in the men’s B group, placing 17th overall, while Hughes was unable to complete the course for Brevard.

On the women’s side Sykes took on the field, finishing in the top 10 to end the weekend for Brevard.

The Tornados are back in action in two weeks as they travel to Banner Elk, N.C. to take part in the Southeastern Collegiate Cycling Championships, hosted by Lees-McRae College on October 15th and 16th.
