Graham, Bundy fire away in Tornados loss to Young HarrisOctober 19, 2011
Brevard falls to Mountain Lions on Wednesday, 2-0
Brevard, N.C. - Jamie Bundy and Lizzie Graham combined for seven shots on goal, but second half scores by Emily Villas and Haley Holderfield put the visiting Young Harris Mountain Lions in the lead as the Tornados fell on Wednesday afternoon on the BC Soccer Field, 2-0.
Graham and Bundy challenged Young Harris (9-3-1) goalkeeper Kelsey Cunningham early, recording three shots in the first 20 minutes. However, Villas and Whitney Thomas kept pace against BC (2-12) goalkeeper Brittany Webster as the Mountain Lions outshot the Tornados 10-7 in the first half, but the score remained 0-0 as the teams headed into the halftime break.
An early offering by Bailey Varley was blocked in the Young Harris goal box in the beginning of the second half and YHC took advantage, moving downfield as Villas, Mika Lopes and Devin Waldron all had shots turned away by Crissy Moran before Villas found a gap in the BC defense at the 62:58 mark off the pass from Lopes, putting it in the bottom left corner to put the guests up 1-0.
Holderfield added to the lead at the 74:53 mark, receiving the through ball from Villas past a diving Moran and tapped the ball into the back of the net to give Young Harris the 2-0 lead.
The Tornados battled back late in the final period as Bundy and Graham had three opportunities to put Brevard on the scoreboard, challenging Gabby Smith in the net, but Smith proved up to the task in deflecting all three attempts to keep the shutout intact.
Brevard returns to the road this weekend as they travel to Newberry, S.C. on Saturday, October 22nd, as they take on Newberry College in SAC competition. Kickoff between the Tornados and the Wolves is set for 2 p.m.
