Valkyries take match in three sets against Golden Bulls
Brevard, N.C. - Kortney Conner led the Tornados with 11 kills against Converse College and Joy Oswalt recorded a career high 10 kills against Johnson C. Smith University as Brevard recorded the sweep in Saturday’s tri-match in Boshamer Gymnasium.
Converse recorded the 3-0 victory over the Golden Bulls in the second match of the day behind nine kills from Val Thoms.
Match One: Brevard 3, Converse 0
Conner led the Tornados with 11 kills and Ashlie Morrison added nine as the Tornados (6-19) hit 18.6 percent from the floor in defeating the Valkyries in the first match of the day, 25-13, 25-21, 25-17. Bethany Stevenson added 25 set assists and 10 digs, while Conner and Lindsey Rogers had 13 digs apiece to pace the Brevard defense.
Jameiha Maxwell led Converse (3-19) with six kills, while Thoms and Anna Williams added five apiece to lead the Valkyries attack. Kandace Griffin added 11 set assists, while Bri Scalt led the defensive efforts with a team high 10 digs in the match.
The Tornados broke a 4-4 tie in the first set with an 8-1 run on a pair of Conner kills and an ace by Jamie Atkinson, going up 12-5. Converse brought the set back to 13-10 behind an ace by Aubrey Crosby, but the Tornados again went on a 6-1 run go take the 19-11 advantage on Stevenson’s serve and a Conner kill gave Brevard the first set 25-13.
Converse came out the gates hot in the second set, going up 6-0 on Griffin’s serve before a kill by Morrison ended the Valkyries’ run. The Tornados battled back, tying the match up at 11 apiece on a block by Ashley Wilson and Stevenson and took their first lead of the match following a Converse attack error. The teams battled each other to a standstill with the match tied at 18 before kills by Atkinson and Stevenson gave the Tornados a lead they would not relinquish and back-to-back kills by Morrison put Brevard up 2-0 with the 25-21 set victory.
Brevard scored six of the first eight points en route to a 16-4 lead in the third set behind a trio of kills by Conner and two kills apiece by Atkinson and Oswalt. Converse battled back, scoring six of the next 10 points on kills by Maxwell, Anna Williams and a Griffin service ace, but the Tornados were able to close out the match on a Sydney Yeomans’ ace to take the match 25-17.
Match Two: Converse 3, Johnson C. Smith 0
Thoms led the Valkyries in the second match of the day, recording a team high nine kills and Griffin added eight as Converse hit 16.5 percent from the court in the neutral site competition. Griffon added 25 set assists and four service aces, while Bri Scalf contributed a match high 17 digs to lead the Valkyries to the 25-16, 25-23, 25-15 victory.
Kayla Bazemore led the Golden Bulls (4-22) with four kills in the match, while Alexis Webb contributed eight set assists to pace the attack. Elana Foster contributed two service aces, while Sharelle Hatley led Johnson C. Smith with a team high 16 digs to guide the Golden Bulls backline.
Converse went up 6-1 after back-to-back service aces by Williams on their way to building a 16-9 advantage. The Golden Bulls battled back, cutting the lead down to three at 18-15 behind a Bazemore kill, but a JCSU service error swung the match back in favor of the Valkyries as they rode four service aces to the 25-16 victory.
The Valkyries also went up 6-1 to start the highly contested second set as the teams combined for five ties, the first coming at 16-all following a pair of Amber Alexander kills. Neither team was able to record an advantage as the match remained tied at 23 apiece, before a kill by Griffin and a Maxwell service ace gave Converse the 25-23 set victory.
Converse recorded the first four points on their way to building the 16-9 advantage in the third set. Johnson C. Smith continued to fight back throughout the remainder of the set, but a kill by Thoms ended the match after the 25-15 set win.
Match Three: Brevard 3, Johnson C. Smith 0
Oswalt led the Tornados with a career high 10 kills and Atkinson and Stevenson both recorded three service aces as the Tornados hit 34.7 percent from the floor in the match in completing the season sweep over the Golden Bulls. Rogers added a match high 25 digs to lead Brevard on the backline in the 25-7, 25-8, 25-17 victory.
Bazemore again led the Golden Bulls with eight kills in the match and added a team high five set assists. Hatley led the backline with 12 digs in the match, while Sabrina Johnson had a team high two blocks to pace the JCSU defense.
Three Bazemore kills tied the first set up at 3 apiece, but the Tornados went on a 10-1 run on six Conner kills to give the Tornados the 13-4 advantage. Brevard continued to press the attack on Amanda Possidente’s serve before closing out the 25-7 set victory on back-to-back Stevenson service aces.
Brevard took a 10-3 advantage in the second set before the Golden Bulls battled back behind a kill by Webb to cut the score to 10-6. However, the Tornados went on a 14-1 run on Yeomans’ serve to go up 24-7 and a kill by Erin Rollins closed out the 25-8 victory to put BC up 2-0.
The Tornados jumped ahead 13-3 in the third set behind four kills by Ashley Wilson on their way to building an 18-9 lead. Johnson C. Smith battled back behind kills by Bazemore and Williams, but Atkinson placed in a pair of service aces as Brevard completed the 25-17 victory.
Brevard remains at home in Boshamer Gymnasium as they host Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday, October 26th. First serve between the Tornados and the Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m.
