Brevard College to Name Basketball Court After Retired Coach and Mentor Chick Martin
Dedication will take place before men's basketball game on Saturday
Brevard, N.C. - Leighton "Chick" Martin, retired coach, teacher and mentor to student athletes at Brevard College for almost two decades, will be honored on Saturday, Jan. 21 when the College names its basketball court at Boshamer Gymnasium in his honor.
Chick Martin Court will be dedicated at 3:30 p.m. following the Brevard College Women’s Basketball game against Wingate University. The Brevard College’s Men’s Basketball team will take on the Wingate Bulldogs on the court following the ceremony.
"This is a well deserved recognition for a man who dedicated his life to Brevard College athletics," said Brevard College Athletics Director Juan Mascaro.
"Seeing Chick Martin’s name on the gym floor provides us with a reminder of Chick's historic influence on Brevard College athletics, and the inscription will serve to preserve his legacy in the years to come," added Ken Kolb, president of Brevard College’s Tornado Club.
Martin is a living legend of Brevard College. He started at Brevard College in 1955 and, until 1972, ran a program of excellence as athletic director, chairman of the department of health and physical education and head coach of the men’s basketball team. Along the way, Martin distinguished himself and Brevard College as director of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for 10 years and president of the Western North Carolinas Junior College Athletic Association.
Martin’s trail of successes includes being the all-time winningest coach in the history of Brevard College basketball, with 240 wins and four conference championship titles. Two of his basketball teams qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament in Kansas, a first for Brevard College. Martin is a member of the Western North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame Committee, the Brevard College Alumni Honor Roll as well as the Brevard College Athletics Hall of Fame.
In 2010, the Brevard College Athletics Department hosted the Chick Martin Tribute – a celebration of the legacy of Chick Martin. The event launched the Chick Martin Challenge: a drive for the funding of the Chick Martin Training Center and the naming of the Boshamer Gymnasium floor.
Thanks to donor support, work on the Chick Martin Training Center began soon after the Challenge was initiated. Once completed, the center will offer the campus 5,500 square feet of work out space in an open, glass wall setting within Boshamer Gymnasium and will feature the latest weight training and conditioning equipment. The facility, which will be comparable to weight rooms found within the South Atlantic Conference and Division I institutions, will provide five times the current space to better accommodate the needs of Brevard College’s students, faculty and staff.
