Tornados listed in SAC, NCAA Division II Statistics
Jones leads SAC in tackles
Indianapolis, Ind. - The Brevard College football team is well represented in this week's edition of the NCAA Division II statistics, compiled through five weeks of the season.
Leading the way for Brevard in the statistics, as he does on the field, is junior linebacker Stanley Jones (Spartanburg, S.C.). Following his epic 21-tackle performance against Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, Jones raised his average to 10.75 tackles, per game, good for 13th nationally. That average also leads the South Atlantic Conference.
Punter Luke Lovelace (Hendersonville, N.C.) has done a fine job gaining field position for the Tornados this season, and his effort is reflected in the statistics. Lovelace's 38.89 yards per punt places him 51st nationally among Division II punters. Lovelace also ranks second in the South Atlantic Conference in the category and leads the SAC in total punts.
Kick returner Shorick Johnson (Seneca, S.C.) took off for a 77-yard return in the 2nd quarter of Saturday's game, a big reason why he places 65th nationally with a 23.82 yards per return average. Johnson ranks 5th in the SAC in that category and leads the conference in fumbles forced, with two.
Sure-handed punt returner Jared Light (Kernersville, N.C.) has been a steady special teams presence all season long, and finds himself in a tie for 80th nationally and fifth in the SAC, averaging 6.86 yards per return.
Rounding out the statistically strong Tornados is senior running back John Taylor (Richmond, Va.). Despite not suiting up against Lenoir-Rhyne, Taylor still qualifies for 84th nationally and fifth in the SAC, averaging 67.33 rushing yards per game.
The Tornados (1-3, 0-1 SAC) host No. 18 Wingate University (5-0, 1-0 SAC) Saturday at Brevard Memorial Stadium. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m., and broadcast coverage on WSQL AM-1240 and wsqlradio.com begins at 5:20 p.m.
