Sharp-shooting Pioneers top Tornados on Saturday
Watkins has 10 points and four steals in loss
Greeneville, Tenn. - A 17-4 Tusculum run at the beginning of the second half broke open a one possession contest in Pioneer Arena on Saturday afternoon as Brevard fell on the road to the Pioneers in SAC action, 67-45.
Kendal Baxter scored 14 of her game high 25 points in the second half to pace Tusculum (15-5, 9-3 SAC) to the season sweep over Brevard (5-15, 0-12 SAC) as the Tornados struggled to connect from the floor in the contest, shooting 30.6 percent (19-62) from the floor as a team.
Micheala Watkins led the Tornados with 10 points and had four steals, while Lindsay Brendle had nine points and five boards in the loss. Anna Schlobohm added nine points from the bench, while Lacey Singletary added a team high six rebounds as Brevard falls to 5-15 on the season.
Baxter led all players with 25 points, hitting four three-pointer as the Pioneers shot 43.9 percent (25-57) from the floor as a team. Staci Hicks added 15 points and nine rebounds, while April McCann filled the statistic sheet with five assists and 10 rebounds in the victory.
Hicks scored the first four points of the contest to pace the Pioneers to the early lead as Tusculum held the scoring advantage through the first ten minutes of the first half. Holli Flippo drilled a three-pointer to give the Tornados their first lead of the game at 15-13 with 9:09 to play, but Blakeley Burleson answered with a trey two possessions later to put the Pioneers back on top.
The Tornados tied the game up twice in the final six minutes of the half as Schlobohm connected from behind the arc to knot the score at 21 with 5:58 on the clock, and Watkins and Linda Aughburns traded layups to keep the score tied at 23 apiece with 2:39 to play in the half.
Baxter connected on three free throws and Schlobohm’s jumper was answered by a Hicks layup in the closing seconds of the half as the Pioneers went into the break up 28-25.
Hicks and McCann scored the first five points of the second half to spark a 17-4 run for the Pioneers as Tusculum built their first double-digit lead of the game at 45-29 with 10:39 on the clock. Asheley Watkins ended the run with a layup and Flippo connected on her second three-pointer of the contest to cut the lead down to 10 at 46-36 with 8:36 remaining in the contest.
The Pioneers ended the Tornados comeback attempt with a 19-7 run capped by a layup by Hicks with 2:11 left in the contest as Brevard fell on the road on Saturday afternoon, 67-45.
Brevard remains on the road on Wednesday, February 8th, as BC travels to Salisbury, N.C. to take on Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference action. Tipoff between the Tornados and the Indians inside Goodman Gymnasium is set for 6 p.m.
