Tornados bats lead the way in Saturday sweep over Alderson-Broaddus
Queen, Merriken and O'Dell go deep for Brevard as Tornados take two from A-B
Brevard, N.C. - Tarron Robinson came around to score on a wild pitch to lead the Tornados to victory over Alderson-Broaddus in game one, while Brevard scored four runs in both the second and third innings to back a strong pitching performance by Joe Lepore as the Tornados swept both games of the doubleheader against the Battlers on Saturday afternoon at Gil Coan Field, 5-4 and 13-7.
Cody Queen, Zach Merriken and Randy O’Dell all went deep for Brevard (2-2), while Jeff Conley and Kirby Clemens both hit home runs for the Battlers (0-2) as the teams took advantage of windy conditions which turned Gil Coan Field into a launching pad as both sides combined for 11 extra-base hits in the doubleheader.
Game One: Brevard 5, Alderson-Broaddus 4
Bennett Hixson (1-0) pitched 1.2 inning of no-hit relief for the Tornados and Robinson came around to score on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and two outs to cap off the first game on Gil Coan Field in the 2012 season as Brevard opened the weekend series against the Battlers with the 5-4 victory.
A-B opened the game scoring in the top of the first as Mitch Roy lead off the game reaching on a three-base error. Conley followed by lofting a fly ball to left field off BC starting pitcher Johnathon Chaplain and the ball carried over the 375’ sign in left centerfield in putting the Battlers up 2-0.
Brevard answered in the bottom of the second as Kramer Clark and Chad Funkhouser drew back-to-back walks with one out. Bennett Hixson plated the first BC run of the game with a single to right centerfield, scoring Clark and following a walk to Christian Christopoulos by A-B starter Paul Gonzales, Eric Reneger brought home Funkhouser on a grounder to first as the Tornados tied the game up at 2 apiece.
The Battlers and the Tornados remained tied after the third inning as Sean Collette brought home Roy on a sacrifice fly, while Queen hit a solo home run to left field for the Tornados to keep the game at 3-all.
Merriken put Brevard ahead in the bottom of the sixth, driving a one-out offering over the left centerfield fence to put the Tornados up 4-3 heading into the final inning.
The Battlers scratched across the tying run in the top of the seventh as Roy brought home Brandon Gignac with two outs.
Seth Martin (0-1) and Hixson traded 1-2-3 innings on the mound in the bottom of the seventh and top of the eighth, before Brevard loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth as Robinson walked, Kameron Armacost reached on a bunt single and Funkhouser drew a walk to load the bases. Martin’s pitch to Hixson sailed to the backstop allowing Robinson to cross the plate for the game-winning run, giving Brevard their first win of the 2012 season.
Game Two: Brevard 13, Alderson-Broaddus 7
The Tornados saw runners cross the plate in every inning, led by a five RBI performance by O’Dell as Brevard completed the sweep of the doubleheader over Alderson-Broaddus on Saturday afternoon.
Renegar and O’Dell had three hits apiece in the game to pace the Brevard offensive efforts, while Clark and Armacost had two hits and scored three runs apiece as the Tornados supported the combined pitching performance of Brennan Daniels and Lepore in the 13-7 victory.
Brevard opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as O’Dell drove a single to right field, scoring Renegar from first base as the Tornados threatened to take control of the game early, loading the bases with two outs off A-B starter Kyle Oney (0-1). However, Oney was able to retired the side with a groundout to keep Brevard to the 1-0 lead after the first.
The Battlers struck back in the second, tying the game in the top half of the inning as Mike Hackett opened the inning with a double before coming home on back-to-back singles by Clemens and Bobby Williams to knot up the game.
Brevard answered with four in the bottom half of the inning as Armacost, Renegar, Queen and Robinson all crossed the plate. The Battlers and Tornados combined for seven runs in the third inning with A-B plating three, while Brevard scored four in the bottom half of the inning with O’Dell providing most of the damage with a two-out, two RBI double, scoring Renegar and Robinson.
Brevard added two more runs in the fourth and single runs in both the fifth and the sixth, with O’Dell again providing the fireworks with a one-out solo home run to left field, to offset runs by the Battlers in the fifth and the seventh as the Tornados closed out the sweep.
Brevard and Alderson-Broaddus close out the weekend series on Sunday, February 12th as the teams face off at Gil Coan Field on the campus of Brevard College. First pitch of the nine-inning contest between the Tornados and the Battlers is set for 1 p.m.
