CLemens adds solo home run as Brevard takes game two, 4-3
Mars Hill, N.C. - Kayla Clemens and Brittany Tucker helped Brevard College bounce back after dropping their SAC opener against Mars Hill as the Tornados rallied to take game two of the doubleheader against the Lions as Brevard split the series with Mars Hill, losing the first game 2-0, before taking the second game 4-3.
Alyssa Miller (4-6) picked up her fourth win of the season as Brevard moves to 10-12, 1-1 SAC on the season, while Taylor Hussey (4-5) recorded the win for Mars Hill (12-12, 1-1 SAC) in the opener.
Game One: Mars Hill 2, Brevard 0
Ally Davenport led the Brevard offense with two hits in the contest, but Natalie Haithcox did the damage for the Lions in the game, drilling a pair of solo home runs to give the Lions the 2-0 victory in the SAC opener for both teams.
Haithcox opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, leading off the frame with a solo home run over the right centerfield fence to put the Lions on top early. Haithcox added her second home run of the contest and ninth of the season in the fourth inning, again hitting the ball over the fence in right centerfield to double the Mars Hill lead and provide Hussey with a cushion.
The Tornados best chance to put a dent in the score came in the top of the seventh inning as Davenport reached on a one-out infield single. She moved to second on a passed ball and reached third on a groundout to put Brevard in prime scoring position, but Hussey escaped with the shutout intact as the Lions topped the Tornados 2-0.
Game Two: Brevard 4, Mars Hill 3
Clemens took revenge in the second game, blasting a pitch over the left field fence to score the first run and Tucker put across the insurance run with a solo home run in the top of the sixth as Brevard held on to defeat Mars Hill in the nightcap as Miller picked up the Tornados first SAC win of the season.
Clemens and Tucker both scored twice, while Heather Morris and Maddie Fletcher drove in a run apiece as the Tornados offset a 3-for-3 performance from the plate by Stephanie McGrath in the win.
Clemens blasted the Tornados into the lead in the top of the second inning, driving a pitch from Morris over the left field fence to lead off the frame as Brevard built the 1-0 lead. Mars Hill answered in the bottom half of the inning as McGrath singled in Haithcox with one out as the Lions loaded the bases, but Miller retired the next two batters on strikes to keep the Lions at bay and the score tied.
The Tornados went up for good in the top of the fourth inning as Brevard placed runs on first and third with one out in the inning. Morris singled in Clemens, driving a ball through the left side of the infield to put Brevard up 2-1 and Fletcher followed with a double down the left field line, scoring Tucker to give BC a 3-1 lead.
McGrath again answered for the Lions, cutting into the lead with an infield single in the fifth inning, scoring Morris with two outs as Mars Hill again loaded the bases, but Miller retired Sarah Kruysman on strikes to end the frame and the threat.
Tucker put an insurance run across the plate in the top of the sixth, leading off the inning with a shot settling over the left centerfield fence for her first home run with the Tornados, putting Brevard up 4-2 with two innings to play.
Mars Hill threatened the Brevard lead again in the bottom of the sixth as Ashley McCurry tripled down the right field line, coming around to score on Hussey’s groundout. The Lions placed a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Emily Boykin caught Megan Arrington attempting to steal third and Miller closed out the contest to record the 4-3 victory.
Brevard returns home on Tuesday, March 13th as the Tornados continue South Atlantic Conference play at the BC Softball Field for their SAC home opener against Anderson University. First pitch in the doubleheader between the Tornados and the Trojans is set for 2 p.m.
