Tornados fall to Bulldogs, 5-0October 8, 2008
Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College women’s soccer team fell at home to Wingate University on a cold, rainy afternoon, by a score of 5-0.
For the season, Brevard falls to 5-9, 0-5 in the SAC, while Wingate improves to 8-4, 1-2 in the conference.
The Bulldogs scored in the third minute when Julie Zielinski sent a pass through the backline to a streaking Liz Kinney who put the ball past Tornado goalkeeper Sydney Douglas to put Wingate up, 1-0.
Wingate scored again in the 15th minute when Kinney put a shot on goal that rolled past a diving Douglas into the lower left corner of the net to record her second goal of the match off the pass from Kerstin Williams.
Megan Mastalerz added another goal for the Bulldogs in the 28th minute when she tipped a pass from Zielinski over an advancing Douglas into the back of the net, giving Wingate a 3-0 lead.
In the 36th minute, Madi Welch sent a cross from the right side that found an open Hannah Holsclaw who headed it home to give Wingate a 4-0 lead, which they took to the end of the half.
For the first half, Wingate outshot Brevard 14-4. Douglas was busy as she faced 11 Bulldog shots on goal and saved seven, while her counterpart, Kathryn Smith faced two Tornado shots, saving them both.
The Bulldogs wrapped up the scoring in the 79th minute when Jenni Barbett hammered home a shot off a great crossing pass from Holsclaw, putting Wingate up 5-0.
Emily Belchyk provided some excitement for the host Tornados in the 90th minute when she found herself with a one-on-one opportunity with Smith, but a great diving deflection by the Wingate keeper denied the scoring opportunity.
Coach Liz Stojetz’s team is back in action on Friday, October 17th when they travel to Mars Hill College in search of their first SAC victory of the season. Kickoff time is 7 p.m. Wingate continues to travel as they head to Mars Hill on Friday, October 10th with a start time of 7 p.m.
