Fowler and Miller lead Tornados to 2-0 and 4-1 victories
Brevard, N.C. - Brittany Fowler recorded five hits and Alyssa Miller recorded two doubles and two runs to go with a complete game on the mound as Brevard swept visiting Wingate University on Sunday afternoon at the BC Softball Field, 2-0 and 4-1.
Kayla Clemens (11-11) recorded her third shutout of the season in the first game, scattering four hits in going the distance for Brevard (18-18, 7-7 SAC), while Miller (7-7) escaped a seventh inning jam to defeat Wingate (21-19, 5-7 SAC) and hand Miranda Paul (17-17) her second loss on the day.
Game One: Brevard 2, Wingate 0
Fowler went 3-for-3 in the first game and Brittany Tucker and Chelsi Mallory drove in RBIs as the Tornados opened the first game of the series with the 2-0 victory.
Brevard got on the board in the bottom of the third as Brittany Jones and Fowler led off the inning with back-to-back singles off Paul to give BC two runners on with zero outs. Tucker followed with bunt single, fielding by the pitcher and her relay went past first base into right field allowing Jones to score from second for the first run of the game.
The Tornados plated the final run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth as Fowler led off with a base hit to left centerfield and Tucker followed with a perfectly placed bunt between the infielders allowing Fowler to reach third base. Mallory drove a deep fly ball to right field, allowing Fowler to score to give Clemens an insurance run.
Wingate placed runners on base in both the sixth and the seventh innings, but were unable to push across a run to break up the shutout attempt as the Tornados topped the Bulldogs in the first game of the series.
Game Two: Brevard 4, Wingate 1
Maddie Fletcher drove in two runs in support of Miller and the BC pitcher went the distance as Brevard recorded their second South Atlantic Conference sweep in a row as the Tornados topped the Bulldogs, 4-1.
Miller put the BC offense in motion in the bottom of the second inning, driving a double down the left field line to lead off the frame. A base hit by Meredith Davenport advanced Miller to third, where she scored on Fletcher’s one-out single up the middle. Brittany Jones brought in Davenport with a sacrifice fly to double the score, giving Brevard the 2-0 advantage after two innings.
The Tornados added a third run in the bottom of the third inning as Mallory and Clemens led off the frame with back-to-back doubles to push the BC lead to 3-0.
Brevard added a final run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Miller drove her second double of the game to the right field wall to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt pushed her over to third, where she scored on Fletcher’s bouncing single through the left side of the infield to extend the lead to four.
Wingate battled back in the top of the seventh inning as Jordyn Setzer reached on a one-out double off the left field fence. After an infield popup, Joya Wortham singled to left field, advancing Setzer to third base. A walk issued to Brittany Owens loaded the bases, before Kasey Pendley drove in Setzer with an infield grounder with all base runners advancing to keep Wingate alive. However, Miller retired the final Bulldogs’ batter on strikes to close out the contest and the sweep.
Brevard returns to non-conference play and takes to the road as the Tornados travel to Young Harris, Ga. for a doubleheader against Young Harris College on Tuesday, April 3rd. First pitch between the Tornados and the Mountain Lions is set for 2 p.m.
