Tornados finish third overall in final tuneup before SAC tournament
Etowah, N.C. - Kim Koivu rallied from being four strokes down after the first day to take medalist honors at the Aramark Collegiate Invitational, while Walters State Community College took the team title on the final day of the two-round tournament held at the Etowah Valley Country Club.
Koivu rebounded from a first round 75 to record the only round under par on the final day, finishing with a final round 70 to win the individual title by two strokes, finishing the event with a 145, 1-over par on the afternoon. The individual title is the third win of the freshman’s career at Brevard College and second in three tournaments.
Backed by second and third place finishes by Zach Briggs and John Gillepsie and a fifth place finish by Matthew Chambers, Walters State took the team title by 19 strokes, holding off second place finisher Pfeiffer University and third place Brevard College with a two round score of 602.
Pfeiffer’s Troy Bulmer, Tri-City Community College’s Laurens Oudenne and Lenoir-Rhyne’s Sam Pressley rounded out the podium group at the tournament, with Bulmer finishing fourth overall, while Oudenne and Pressley tied Chambers for fifth overall with matching 152s on the tournament.
Rounding out the group for Brevard in the tournament, Thomas Rennie finished tied for 16th overall in the event, finishing the second round with a combined score of 159, 15-over par, while T.J. Hoard rebounded after a tough first day, dropping seven strokes from his title in finishing tied for 20th overall with a 161, 17-over in the tournament.
Michael Stamper and Diego Ortiz were affected the blustery conditions as both Brevard athletes saw their scores rise on the second day. Stamper finished in a five-way tie for 24th overall with a 163 in the tournament, while Ortiz was 31st overall with a 166 over the two days.
Xiaoran Li finished the tournament after competing as an individual, knocking seven strokes off his first round score to finish 38th in the tournament with a two round score of 185.
Brevard returns to the links next week as the Tornados take part in the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Golf Tournament, hosted in Conover, N.C. at the Rock Barn Golf & Spa. First round action at the tournament is set for Monday, April 16th.
