Men's Tennis sophomore becomes first three-time winner in BC history
Rock Hill, S.C. - For the second consecutive week and third time this season, Brevard College’s Sam MacNeil has been named the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.
MacNeil continued his stretch of undefeated play in the SAC this season, topping opponents from Catawba, Mars Hill, Lincoln Memorial and Tusculum in singles play, while combining with Beau Wills to remain undefeated in doubles play as the sophomore from Dunfermline, Scotland improves to 16-0 overall in the SAC in the season.
MacNeil topped the no. 1s from Catawba and Mars Hill in straight sets, defeating Catawba’s Alex Macdonald 7-5, 6-2, and topped Mars Hill’s Euquerio Guerrero 6-4, 6-4. MacNeil then defeated the 2011 SAC Player of the Year Philipp Hoffman in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, and capped off his week with a 6-1 set victory over Tusculum's Lukas Winkelmann, before the Pioneer athlete had to retire.
In doubles play, MacNeil and Wills remain undefeated on the year, giving Brevard points at the no. 1 pairing in defeating their opponents from Catawba 8-4, Mars Hill 9-8, Lincoln Memorial 8-3 and Tusculum 8-4 as the Tornados duo improves to 8-0 on the season on court no. 1.
MacNeil is a three-time winner of the SAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, and is a Preseason All-SAC First Team selection. He is currently 15-6, 8-0 in the SAC in singles play, and has teamed up with Wills to go 17-4, 8-0 in the conference in doubles on the season.
The Brevard College men’s tennis team finishes up the 2012 regular season on Friday, April 13th, as the Tornados travel to Newberry, S.C. to take on Newberry College. First serve between the Tornados and the Wolves in doubles competition is set for 2 p.m.
