Tornados advance in 2012 SAC Championships with 1-0 victory
Brevard will take on either Tusculum or Lenoir-Rhyne this afternoon
Greeneville, Tenn. - The Brevard College softball team bounced back to stave off elimination as the six-seed Tornados topped seven-seed Wingate University on Friday morning at Chuckey-Doak High School, winning 1-0 in the second round of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Softball Championships.
Brevard, which lost their first round game yesterday to three-seed Anderson University on a walk-off double, pushed a run across in the bottom of the third against the Bulldogs, giving Kayla Clemens all the support she needed as the Second Team All-SAC pitcher threw a one-hitter against Wingate in recording her fourth shutout of the season.
Brevard snapped a scoreless game between Clemens and Wingate’s Miranda Paul in the bottom of the third inning, plating the only run in the game. Emily Boykin led off the inning with a double to left centerfield and Brittany Jones reached on a one-out fielder’s choice to put two runners on for Brevard. All-SAC First Teamer Brittany Fowler followed with an infield single, loading the bases. Paul almost escaped the jam, retiring the next BC hitter on strikes, but Chelsi Mallory coaxed a walk to bring home the first run in the contest.
The Tornados threatened to add to their lead in the fifth inning as Fowler drilled a two-out double in the left center gap and Brittany Tucker and Mallory reached base on a single and walk to load the bases, but Brevard was unable to plate an insurance run in the contest.
Clemens however, did not need the insurance, retiring the final 13 batters of the game after allowing a double to Kelsey Maffuci in the third inning. The Brevard sophomore went the distance, improving to 15-15 in the complete game, striking out three.
Brevard returns to Red Edmonds Field this afternoon in Greeneville, Tenn. as the Tornados take on #5 Tusculum. First pitch between Brevard and the Pioneers is set for 3:30 p.m.
