Tennis duo takes final athlete of the month honors for 2011-2012
Brevard, N.C. - Michelle Prata of the Women’s Tennis team and Sam MacNeil of the Men’s Tennis team have been named the Sports Spots Student-Athletes of the Month for the month of April, as recognized on BCTornados.com on Wednesday afternoon. The award is presented by Sports Spot, in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department.
Prata wins the award for the first time, going undefeated in singles play in April in leading the Tornados to the semifinals of the 2012 Food Lion SAC tournament in Rock Hill, S.C. Prata also teamed up with Claire Dillman to go 4-3 in doubles play in the month, as the duo was recognized on the All-SAC Second Team in doubles play. Prata won four of her six matches in straight sets and clinched Brevard’s win in the SAC quarterfinals against Mars Hill, advancing the women’s tennis team to the second round for the fourth consecutive season.
MacNeil wins the award for the second time in his BC career, capping off his second consecutive undefeated season in South Atlantic Conference play by going a perfect 5-0 in singles play and 4-1 in doubles competition in April, earning South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year honors in men’s tennis. MacNeil won all five singles matches in straight sets to go 9-0 in SAC competition, earning SAC Player of the Week honors twice in the month.
These two athletes were presented with action shots recognizing their award at the annual award ceremony, which will be displayed in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium for the entire school year. A total of eight female and male Sports Spot Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2011-2012 academic year. The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the athletic department staff.
