Tornados Fall Short in Home Opener

Brevard, N.C.- Landon Reid headed in an Efren D. Escobar corner kick in the first half to give the Tornados a 1-0 lead, but three Belmont Abbey second-half goals lifted the Crusaders to a 3-1 victory on Saturday.

Reid’s header found the back of the net at the 11:16 mark in the first half, and Brevard carried the 1-0 lead into the break. The goal was Reid’s second of the year after scoring in the Tornados season opener at Erskine on Thursday.

The Crusaders wasted little time in the second half, tying the game at 1-1 when Jose Penaloza scored on a free kick at 57:59. Penaloza gave Belmont Abbey a 2-1 lead with his second goal of the afternoon at the 65:47 mark.

Belmont Abbey’s Conor Wells scored the final goal at 71:18 to make the score 3-1. The Crusaders had 13 shots on the afternoon, three of which were on goal.

Brevard returns to action at home against Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
