Tornados edged by Mars Hill, 1-0
Mars Hill earns first SAC win of 2008
Mars Hill, N.C. - Misha Price's 10th minute goal was all Mars Hill College needed to earn their first South Atlantic Conference win of 2008, as the Lions downed the Tornados of Brevard College, 1-0, Friday night in women's soccer action. Mars Hill improves to 7-7-3 (1-5 SAC) with the win, while Brevard slips to 5-10 (0-6 SAC).
Price (Cary, N.C.) scored her second goal of the season less than ten minutes into the match on an assist from Alicia Blaha (Rapid City, S.D.). Price's shot from just outside of the box drove through the chilly October air and just past the outstretched dive of Brevard keeper Sydney Douglas (Houston, Tex.), making the score 1-0.
That goal was all Mars Hill needed to secure their first South Atlantic Conference win since October 6, 2007, when they doubled up Wingate University, 2-1.
The Tornados tried desperately for the equalizer in the match's dying breaths, taking three shots in the final six minutes, but the Liz Stojetz's team could not put a ball on target and past Lion keeper Becca Sellars (Loveland, Ohio). Alyssa Caracena (Raleigh, N.C.), Caitlin Hubbard (Clayton, N.C.) and Rachael Laughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) all put shots on target in the match but could not score.
The Lions outshot Brevard 14-7, with seven of Mars Hill's shots finding the target. Douglas saved six of the seven, while Sellars stopped all three shots Brevard put between the pipes.
The scoreless offensive output was the fifth of the season for the Tornados and the fourth in the last five matches. Brevard has scored just three goals in their six conference matches.
Brevard will look to regroup quickly, as they host NAIA foe Emmanuel College Saturday at 2 p.m. The Tornados are 3-1 against NAIA opponents this season. Mars Hill's next match is Wednesday, when they host Erskine College.
