Angel Fire, N.M.- The Brevard College cycling team has won its third Division II Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championship in the last four years, scoring 629 total points as a team during the three-day event.
The Tornados held a 60-point lead in the overall team Omnium going into the final day of competition, with only the Dual Slalom event remaining. Brevard was able to fend off Union (Ky.) College for the title, thanks to strong performances by Mac Banner (3rd) and Daniel Ennis (5th) for the men and Erica Zaveta (8th) and Nicole Miranda (9th) for the women.
Cypress Gorry captured individual National Championships in both the Men's Cross Country and Short Track events. Lewis Gaffney closely trailed Gorry, claiming second in the Men's Cross Country event.
Erica Zaveta was the top peformer for the women, earning a place on the medal stand in the Women's Cross Country (3rd), Short Track (3rd), and Downhill (3rd) events. The performances earned her a 2nd place finish in the Women's Overall Individual Omnium.
"Myself and my assistant coach Brad Perley are so grateful for the opportunity to coach such an awesome team of athletes," said Brevard College Head Cycling Coach Brian Sheedy. "They've worked so hard for this accomplishment and I couldn't be more happy and proud to be a Tornado.
the neatest thing about this team is that they are all just as
passionate as we are about one another, the school, and the wonderful
place where they live, study, and train. How could I not love that?"
