Strong Second Half Leads BC Past Lees-McRae
Banner Elk, N.C.- The Brevard College Tornados downed the Lees-McRae Bobcats 63-57 in Williams Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
BC rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to pick up the nonconference win, with the Tornados taking their first lead of the second half on a Taylor Hiatt layup with 11:02 remaining in the game.
The Bobcats tied the game at 44-44 and again at 46-46 before Micheala Watkins scored five unanswered points to give Brevard a 51-46 lead. Watkins hit a three with the game tied at 46 all, and then hit two free throws at the 5:53 mark to complete the run.
Watkins dropped in a team-high 19 points to fuel the Tornados scoring efforts, including shooting 9-for-10 from the foul line. The senior stuffed the box score with four rebounds, three assists and four steals.
The Tornados got another solid performance from freshman Tuccoa Brackett, who had 17 points and six rebounds on the afternoon. Fellow freshman Katie Williams chipped in eight points off the bench for BC, going 2-for-3 from three-point range and 2-for-2 from the line in 14 minutes of action.
Layana De Souza was instrumental in Lees-McRae’s strong first half, scoring 15 of her 21 points before the break. The junior was a perfect 11-of-11 from the charity stripe and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc in 36 minutes off the bench for the Bobcats.
The Tornados are back in action as they square off against the Presbyterian College Blue Hose on Tuesday morning. The tip from the Templeton Center is set for 11:30 a.m.
