Tornados Fall in Nonconference Action at Mars Hill

Mars Hill, N.C.- The Brevard College baseball team couldn’t hold on to an early lead in a 6-5 loss to Mars Hill in their nonconference bout with the Lions on Wednesday afternoon at Henderson Field.

BC led 3-1 in the 3rd inning after a two-run double by Cody Queen followed by a Bennett Hixson RBI single, but the Lions scored in five straight innings to pull out the victory.

Queen doubled in two more runs in the top of the 7th to bring the Tornados within a run at 6-5, but BC couldn’t plate the equalizer in their final two at-bats.

Brevard starter Zach Joyce (L, 0-2) kept the Lions off the board in the bottom of the 1st, but allowed five runs (four earned) over the next 3.1 innings. The sophomore was lifted for James Phillips with one out in the 5th with the Tornados trailing 5-3.

The Lions made it 6-3 courtesy of an RBI single by Tyler Shuler in the bottom of the 6th.

Queen finished 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Matt Proffitt went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. The Tornados had 10 hits collectively.

The Tornados resume South Atlantic Conference action this weekend as they host the Carson-Newman Eagles at Gil Coan Field. The Tornados and Eagles will square off on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., followed by a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday.
