Brevard Women's Basketball Releases 2008-09 Schedule and Season Outlook

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College Sports Information Department is pleased to announce the college's 2008-09 Women’s Basketball schedule. The Tornados, led by first year head coach Shannon Reid, will be full-time members of NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference for the first time this season.

The 2008-09 slate will not be any easy one for the Tornados, as BC plays 22 out of their 27 games against opponents they face in 2007-08 in which the Tornados went 8-19 overall.

The Tornados will begin the 2008-09 season with an exhibition game against NCAA Division I and Southern Conference member Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. on November 8.  Tip-off at is set for 7 p.m. at the Liston B. Ramsey Regional
Activity Center.

The regular season tips off for the Tornados on November 15 and 16 when BC will travel to Jefferson City, Tenn. to compete in the CNC Classic hosted by Carson-Newman to open up the season.  The Tornados will take on Lees-McRae on November 15 at 6 p.m., as the Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats are picked to finish eighth in the Conference Carolinas coaches' preseason poll after finishing last season with an 8-20 overall record.  On November 16, BC is slated to face off with Lander on day two of the CNC Classic at 2 p.m.  Last season, Lander posted an overall record of 23-12 and went to the second round of the NCAA Regional tournament, as the Lady Bearcats defeated SAC member Tusculum College in the first round, 83-78.

The Tornados will then play at Erskine College, who will playing under first year head coach Jessica Ridgill on November 22 at 2 p.m., before BC opens up their home schedule with back-to-back home games against Virginia Intermont College, who the Tornados split with last year, on November 25 at 6 p.m. and Converse College on November 29 at 2 p.m.  Brevard College defeated Converse College by double-digit points in both of their games last season.

The Tornados will then tip-off their 2008 conference schedule on December 6, when they will travel to Greeneville, Tenn. to square off with the Lady Pioneers of Tusculum College.  The Pioneers, who are the 2007-08 South Atlantic Conference regular season champions, are the favorites to repeat in 2008-09 according to the preseason SAC Coaches Poll.  With the return of all five starters from last year’s South Atlantic Conference championship team, the Tusculum College women’s basketball team is ranked eighth in the nation according to the Women’s Division II Bulletin Preseason Basketball Top 25.  That game is slated for a 2 p.m. tip-off.

Brevard will then have close to two weeks before their next, as BC will travel to Gaffney, S.C. to face off with Limestone College on December 18 at 6 p.m.   Last season, Limestone defeated the Tornados by 10 points in Boshamer Gymnasium, giving a little more flair to this year’s lone meeting between the two teams.

Due to the Christmas Break, the Tornados will not play again until December 30 when they will travel to Virginia to take on Virginia Intermont College for the second time in a little over a month.  This second match up will start at 5:30 p.m. in Bristol, Va.

The Tornados will then open up the new calendar year of 2009 with two home contests versus, first against Mars Hill College on January 3 at 2 p.m. and then against Montreat College on January 5 at 5 p.m..  Last season, Mars Hill swept the Tornados on their way to going 5-9 in the conference and 15-13 overall.
 
Coach Reid’s squad will travel to Hickory, N.C. on January 7 for a 6 p.m. match up with Lenoir-Rhyne University, who is picked to finish fourth in the SAC according to the preseason coaches poll. The Bears bring back 11 letterwinners from last season, including the starting backcourt combo of Amber Holt and Jami Safrit, both of which were named to the preseason All-SAC teams. 

The Tornados will then kick-off a four-game home stand, playing against Lincoln Memorial University on January 10 at 2 p.m., Erskine College on January 12 at 6 p.m., Catawba College only two days later on January 14 at 6 p.m. and Wingate University on January 17 at 2 p.m.

Last season, the Tornados dropped two close games to Lincoln Memorial, as both games were won in overtime by the Lady Railsplitters.  Brevard will then play Erskine at home as part of the home and away agreement, before jumping head first into SAC play starting with the Catawba Indians on January 14.

Catawba swept the Tornados last season and are picked to finish seventh-place in the conference in 2008-09.  This will be a special game for the Tornados new leader, as Coach Reid was a player under current Catawba Head Coach Angie Morton at Pfeiffer University.

Brevard will then take on Wingate University, who last season was the 2008 Food Lion SAC Tournament championship team, advanced to the Elite Eight in of the 2008 NCAA Division II National Tournament and finished the season ranked 10th in the nation. The Bulldogs, who are picked second in the SAC by the coaches, return 11 letterwinners off that squad including the 2008 Player of the Year and SAC Female Athlete of the Year in guard Anna Atkinson.

The Tornados will continue their SAC play on January 21 with a game at Carson-Newman College at 6 p.m., who swept the Tornados last season by almost identical scores, 72-53 and 72-50, before stepping out of conference play to battle the Lady Crusaders of North Greenville University on January 24.  Brevard swept the two-game series last season over the Lady Crusaders, including winning a 57-52 overtime thriller in Tigerville, S.C. back on January 26, 2008.  That non-conference game is slated for a 6 p.m. start at Hayes Gymnasium.

Brevard completes their first rotation around the SAC on January 28, when Newberry College comes to Boshamer for a 6 p.m. tip-off.  The Tornados will look for redemption, as Newberry defeated the Tornados twice last season including a 33 point blowout at Boshamer Gymnasium.

The Tornados make a return trip to Mars Hill on January 31, a 2 p.m. game at Stanford Arena, and host Lenoir-Rhyne on February 4 at 6 p.m. The Tornados travel to Harrogate, Tenn. and cavernous Tex Turner Arena on February 7 for a 6 p.m. game with Lincoln Memorial before returning to Boshamer on February 11 for their final non-conference game of the season, a 6 p.m. match-up with North Greenville.

On Valentine's Day, February 14, Brevard heads to Wingate, N.C. and Cuddy Arena for a 2 p.m. game. Carson-Newman makes a return trip to Brevard on February 18, for a 6 p.m. tilt.

The 2008-09 home finale for BC will be on February 21 against Tusculum, as the game is slated for a 2 p.m. tip-off.

The final two regular season games of '08-'09 are on the road. Brevard goes to Newberry, S.C. and Eleazer Arena on February 25 for a 6 p.m. game with Newberry. The regular season finale is February 28 against Catawba. Salisbury, N.C. and Goodman Gym host the 2 p.m. match-up.

The 2009 SAC Tournament begins on March 4, when the top eight seeds in the nine-team conference play quarterfinal games at the home gyms of the top four seeds. The semifinals and championship game will once again be played at Catawba Valley Community College's Multipurpose Facility on March 7 and 8.
