BC Edges Tusculum in Series OpenerMarch 15, 2013
Greeneville, Tenn.- Brevard's Champ Stuart led off the game with a homer to left field and Cody Queen singled in two more runs in the 5th inning to help the Tornados edge the Tusculum Pioneers 3-2 in the South Atlantic Conference series opener at Pioneer Park on Friday night.
Stuart's round-tripper gave BC starter Kevin Hamilton (W, 5-1) a 1-0 advantage to start the game. The righty held the Pioneers to two runs over 7.1 innings while fanning nine.
Cade Stallings answered with a sacrifice fly for the Pioneers in their half of the 1st to tie the game at 1-1.
The game went scoreless for the next three innings as Hamilton and TC starter Taylor Rakes engaged in a pitcher's duel through the 4th.
Chris Christopoulos started the 5th with a single for BC, which Stuart followed with a walk. After Kody Spenced laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up 90 feet, Queen laced the two-run single to left to put the Tornados up 3-1.
To start the 8th, TC's Jalen Shuffler doubled before Hamilton struckout Tripper Crisson for the first out. Cody Fisher (S, 2) then entered in relief and issued a walk to Stallings before Heath Comerford doubled in Shuffler to make it 3-2. Stallings tried to score from first on the play, but was gunned down at the plate on a throw from Eric Renegar that was relayed from Stuart in centerfield.
Fisher retired the side in order to end the game.
The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Pioneer Park on Saturday at 1 and 4 p.m.
