Tornados Split DH with LMU
Harrogate, Tenn.- The Brevard College Tornados softball team split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters at Dorothy Neely Field on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 in the opener before earning the split with a 6-4 win in eight innings.
Game 1: LMU 4, Brevard 2
Brittany Tucker homered in the 4th to make it a 4-2 game, but the Tornados couldn’t push any more runs across against LMU starter Samantha Smith, who threw a complete game to earn her 14th win this season.
LMU put two runs up in the bottom of the 2nd as Cierra Mudd produced an RBI double and scored on a BC error. Mudd also knocked a two-run homer in the bottom of the 3rd to put LMU up 4-1.
The Tornados didn’t go quietly in the 7th as Ally Davenport and Alyssa Miller notched a pair of two-out singles to bring the winning run to the plate, however, Samantha Smith forced a pop up to end the game.
Jamie Hrobak (L, 5-8) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Tornados after surrending two hits and two runs in 1.1 innings of work. The Tornados' six-hit effort was carried by two hits apiece from Alyssa Miller and Ally Davenport.
The Tornados out-hit LMU 6-5 in the contest.
Game 2: Brevard 6, LMU 4
Brittany Jones singled through the right side to score two runs in the top of the 8th to give the Tornados the split for the afternoon after Kayla Clemens retired the side in the 8th without incident.
Clemens (W, 3-6) tossed a complete-game on the mound for Brevard, allowing seven hits and four earned runs while striking out 11 batters.
The Tornados put a run on the board on a Clemens RBI single in the 1st and Alyssa Miller tripled in Michelle Ray and Corrine Stiles in the 2nd. Ally Davenport executed a squeeze bunt to score Miller and put BC ahead 4-0 heading into the bottom of the 2nd.
The Lady Railsplitters got a run back with a solo from Cierra Mudd in the bottom of the 2nd and cut BC’s lead to 4-3 with two runs in the 5th. Laura Taricano sparked the scoring with an RBI triple down the left-field line and Amanda Snow followed that hit with a run-scoring single.
LMU tied the game with an Amanda Snow single in the bottom of the 7th to send the game into extras.
The Tornados return to action as they host UMN Crookston on Monday afternoon for a nonconference doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m.
