Tornados fall to Eagles, 3-0

Brevard, N.C. - With one game left on the schedule, the Brevard College women’s soccer team traveled Wednesday afternoon to take on fellow South Atlantic Conference member Carson-Newman. The game was close through the first half, but the Tornados ultimately fell to the host Eagles, 3-0.

For the season the Tornados fall to 6-11-1, 0-7 in the conference, while the Eagles improve to 12-5, 6-1 in the SAC.

The teams were scoreless through most of the first half. Brevard notched the first shot in the game by senior Courtney Sofferin in the 4th minute but her attempt was saved by Eagles keeper Lauren MacKenzie.

With one second left on the clock in the first half, Carson-Newman’s Katie Hunter passed a ball into the box to Morgan Gruenenfelder who chipped the ball over Tornados keeper Jordan Box to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles came out firing in the second half but Box was able to keep them at bay until a corner kick by Carson-Newman’s Lydia Wright was misplayed in the box and ended up in the goal, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

After several shots by Brevard’s Alyssa Caracena, Latoshia Hopewell, and Bailey Varley, the Eagles tallied their final goal on a corner kick from Wright to Megan Julian.

For the game, the Tornados were outshot 20-5. Box faced 10 shots on goal and saved seven. MacKenzie faced two shots on goal and saved both in the Eagles victory.

The Tornados head home on Saturday, November 1, for senior day as they recognize Carrilea Potter, Ashley Fincher, Courtney Sofferin and Jennifer King for their contributions on the field. Brevard will take on Catawba College on the Brevard Soccer Field with a kickoff time of 4 p.m. Carson-Newman hosts Newberry College on Saturday with a start time of 5:30 p.m.
