Wingate, N.C- The Brevard College Tornados were swept in a three-game series with the first-place Wingate Bulldogs over the weekend at Ron Christopher Stadium, falling 1-0 in the opener on Friday night before dropping a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1 (Friday): Wingate 1, Brevard College 0
Wingate University starter Ben Currie tossed a five-hit shutout while Jason Hunter cracked a solo homer as the Bulldogs edged BC in the opener.
Hunter was 2-for-3 on the night, leading off the fifth inning with his second homer of the year, a solo shot to right to give Wingate the 1-0 lead.
Brennan Daniels (L, 1-5) gave BC a complete-game effort, allowing a run on five hits in eight innings of work. The righty fanned four while walking one.
Game 2 (Saturday): Wingate 13, Brevard College 4
Wingate's Jason Hunter had two homers and five RBI to lead the Wingate offense while Bulldogs starter TJ Rinoski (W, 5-0) allowed two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Kevin Hamilton (L, 5-3) was plagued by BC fielding errors, allowing seven runs (only two were earned) on seven hits in four innings of work, striking out three and walking one.
Bennett Hixson was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Brevard while Matthew Proffitt finished 1-for-2 with an RBI. Champ Stuart had a hit and two runs scored, while Eric Renegar added a double and a run scored for the Tornados.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the first, getting singles from Eric Serra and Bill Krebs to start the game. Wingate's Brian Yeung plated Serra with a sacrifice fly.
Wingate added five runs in the third. Thomas Spitz ripped a two-run double to left center to make it 3-0, while a sacrifice fly from Blake Prince pushed the lead to four. Hunter’s first homer of the day, a two-run shot to right, made it 6-0. Spitz added an RBI single in the fourth to give WU a seven-run lead.
Brevard scored a pair of runs in the sixth to cut the lead to five. Hixson plated the first run with an RBI double, while an RBI single from Proffitt made it 7-2.
Wingate answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to push the lead back to seven. Spitz drove home the first run with an RBI single, while an RBI double from Matthew Barrier made it 9-2.
Stuart led off the seventh with a single before stealing second and third to and scoring on an error.
Brad Cherry led off the bottom of the inning with a double for Wingate, then scored on an RBI single from Michael Godinez to make it 10-3.
The Bulldogs plated three more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Hunter jacked his fourth homer of the season, a three-run shot to right to make it 13-3.
Stuart reached on an error in the 9th and scored on a Nick Blackwood single for BC's final run.
Game 3 (Saturday): Wingate 4, Brevard College 1
Wingate used a four-run 3rd inning to down BC in the final game. Zach Joyce (L, 1-3) tossed a complete game for the Tornados, striking out one and walking one.
Jay Schulte was one-for-three with an RBI to lead the Brevard attack. Cody Queen went 2-for-2 with a run scored for the Tornados.
Brevard’s lone run came in the sixth. Cody Queen led off the inning with a single before moving to second on John Slade’s single. Queen scored on an RBI single from Schulte to make the final score 4-1.
WU starter Olen Little (W, 6-1) threw all seven innings for the Bulldogs, holding BC to a run on five hits in seven innings of work, striking out three and walking just one.
The Tornados will host the Erskine College Flying Fleet on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. first pitch at Gil Coan Field.
