BC Rally Comes Up Short
Brevard, N.C.- Brevard scored three times in the late innings to pull within a run of Newberry College in the 8th, but the Tornados couldn’t find the equalizer in a 5-4 loss to the Wolves at Gil Coan Field on Friday afternoon.
Brevard’s Chris Christopoulos knocked a two-run homer to left with two outs in the 8th to trim the Wolves lead to one, but Newberry’s Tyler Sturkie (S, 7) was able to hold the lead with a scoreless 9th.
Champ Stuart led off the 7th with a single and moved himself into scoring position by stealing second and third. Eric Renegar brought Stuart in with a sac fly to cut the Newberry lead to 5-2. Stuart stole four bases in the game.
Renegar gave BC a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st with an opposite field homer before Newberry scored five straight runs.
BC senior Brennan Daniels (L, 1-6) started the game for the Tornados but was lifted after four innings on the hill. The righty allowed a two-run homer to Newberry’s Eric Barbieri in the top of the 4th to put Newberry ahead 2-1.
The Wolves added a pair of runs against BC reliever James Phillips in the top of the 5th, scoring two on a Barbieri double. Only one run was earned after the relay was fumbled along the fence by BC right fielder John Slade.
Newberry’s Brandon Sheridan added a solo homer off Chad Fisher to give the Wolves a four-run lead.
The Tornados will finish their 2013 season with a doubleheader against the Wolves on Saturday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. First pitch of the opener is slated for 12 p.m., and Brevard’s seniors will be recognized with a ceremony between games.
