Tornados fall to Indians in three setsNovember 1, 2008
Salisbury, N.C. - Traveling over 530 miles in a 24 hour period showed on the Brevard College volleyball team as they fell Saturday afternoon against host Catawba College in three sets, 25-22, 25-9, 25-14.
The Tornados fall to 11-16, 2-13 in the conference while the Indians improve to 17-9, 9-5 in the South Atlantic Conference.
Trying to bounce back from a trip Friday night from Hickory, N.C., the Tornados were on their game early as the teams were even through the first set. The Tornados went up 11-9 early behind back to back kills by freshman Chelsea Larsen and junior Brooke Seaman. The Indians fought back through and tied the set up at 13. The teams traded points from then on with the Tornados taking a late 22-21 lead on a kill by junior transfer Chelsey Trojan. However, Catawba rallied behind four straight kills by Melissa Griffith to take the set, 25-22.
In the second set the Tornados jumped to an early 4-1 lead behind their preseason 2nd team All-SAC member, Seaman, but Catawba evened the set up at five, and coasted the rest of the way behind five straight service aces by Griffith in winning 25-9.
The Tornados battled hard in the third set, but ultimately fell to the Indians, 25-14.
For the game, Brevard was led by Trojan and Seaman each tallying nine kills. Freshman Jordei Osby got on the board as well with four kills and a solo block and block assist. Senior setter Jami Perry added 18 set assists and a game-high 14 digs, and sophomore libero Rebecca Schoonover and freshman Lindsey Rogers each had seven digs for the match.
The Indians were led by the combination of Griffith and Melissa Powers who combined for 25 kills and 10 service aces. Megan Courson recorded a match-high 36 set assists and Powers recorded a team high 11 digs for the match.
The Tornados are back in action on Wednesday, November 5, when they return home to the friendly confines of Boshamer Gymnasium to take on Tusculum College. First serve is at 7 p.m. The Indians will remain at home as they take on UNC Pembroke on November 4 with a start time of 7 p.m.
