Tornados take Indians to overtime before falling, 1-0

Salisbury, N.C. - The Brevard College men’s soccer team finished off a Saturday which saw four Tornados’ teams (football, women’s soccer, volleyball and men’s soccer) take on their respective counterparts from Catawba College. The men’s game was the nightcap of the all day affair as both teams fought for the last berth in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament.

The teams fought through a scoreless regulation, but Catawba emerged on top in the first overtime period to take the game, 1-0.

For the season, the Tornados fall to 5-14-1, 1-7 in the South Atlantic Conference, while the Indians improve to 4-13, 2-6 in SAC play.

The first half was scoreless, but had plenty of action as the Indians started off their attack early when David Bloom had a penalty kick saved by Tornado keeper freshman Jerry Hatsady in the 4th minute. The Tornados notched shots by senior Kyle Hamilton and freshman Miika Kasterinen, but both goalkeepers remained perfect, keeping the score at 0-0 for the half.

In the first half, the Tornados were outshot 6-4. Hatsady made four saves on the Indians’ four shots on goal, while Tyler Held made one save on his end.

Junior Ian Townson came out firing for the Tornados in the second half, challenging Held in the 46th minute, but his shot was turned away. The teams swapped shots throughout the remainder of the second half, keeping the goalkeepers busy, but neither team was able to tally a goal on the board to claim victory.

Catawba clinched the game in the first overtime period in the 92nd minute when Bloom’s shot was blocked by Hatsady, but the ricochet traveled to Carter Richardson who put the ball in the back of the net to give the Indians a 1-0 victory.

For the game, the Tornados were outshot 16-10. Hatsady collected eight saves for the Tornados, while Held stopped all four Tornado shots on goal in collecting the shutout.
